Nine-Year-Old's Lemonade Stand Raises Thousands for Detroit: Did You Have a Lemonade Stand When You Were a Kid?

Nine-year-old Joshua Smith opened a lemonade stand to raise money after his mother explained why he couldn't walk down the street to play in his neighborhood park. "The city only has enough money to cut the grass twice a year and there's just too much trash down there," she told him.

Josh took it upon himself to raise money to help the city out. He opened up a lemonade stand and ended up raising well over $3,000 for Detroit. His father, a math teacher, has been amazed at the response. "I’m very proud of him. It’s not often that someone sees a small problem and wants to do anything about it, much less a big problem -- the city’s broke. We have adults who understand some of the complexities of that and come away jaded and negative."

GOOD.IS reports:
He thought his city would "cease to exist, like, Pluto" so he set up a fundraiser on his stoop.

Governments have nearly outlawed lemonade stands now. My kids fear the police will raid them for not having a health inspection, paying taxes, business permit, etc...

I attempted it one time, but it failed miserably because of law enforcement, I was 7 -_-. (Didn't even get a chance to get one customer). Even if I did succeed, I damn sure wouldn't have raised it for the greedy ass city.

I always had the impression it was illegal and that I would need a license to do something like that.

Not only did I have a Lemonade Stand but at five years old I asked permission at the nearby Golf Course if I could park my wagon for the summer out at the back nine off the course. The manager gave me permission and I sold Lemonade and cookies. I made a bundle and the tips were even often a dollar back in the early 60's.
They would never allow a kid to do that these days.
Hey, who can resist a cute little blond girl selling lemonade on a hot summer day during golf.

    It was a gold mind.

It was years later that I realized how bad a beating we took on it. Our parents subsidized it to encourage our entrepreneurial spirits.

Absolutely. Steady customers too. My dad used to say Stevie can take $5 of his Mom's sugar and lemons make $3.50 take his two friends to a movie and Woolworth's for lunch and have change to boot.

@ Debowman: LMAO!! And see, Stevie, just like Mr. Dictator said, you didn't build that successful business on your own. Somebody along the line gave you some help. Though in this case, it was your parents (as in FAMILY) that helped you, whereas Mr. D. was referring to the government as the one who helps people succeed. LMAO!!!

I can't log on to that. Haven't been following the two year long campaign. Had my cable turned off months and months ago. There in lies our problem the government calls it help and I call it fees, licenses, regulations, inspections, warrants, more regulations, taxes, intervention, more fees, etc. Not help. They only help themselves. I have friends who say if they followed the government regulations controlling their industry precisely they would go to jail and pass through bankruptcy on the way. Where is the help?
