Nine-Year-Old's Lemonade Stand Raises Thousands for Detroit: Did You Have a Lemonade Stand When You Were a Kid?

Nine-year-old Joshua Smith opened a lemonade stand to raise money after his mother explained why he couldn't walk down the street to play in his neighborhood park. "The city only has enough money to cut the grass twice a year and there's just too much trash down there," she told him.

Josh took it upon himself to raise money to help the city out. He opened up a lemonade stand and ended up raising well over $3,000 for Detroit. His father, a math teacher, has been amazed at the response. "I’m very proud of him. It’s not often that someone sees a small problem and wants to do anything about it, much less a big problem -- the city’s broke. We have adults who understand some of the complexities of that and come away jaded and negative."

GOOD.IS reports:
He thought his city would "cease to exist, like, Pluto" so he set up a fundraiser on his stoop.

Governments have nearly outlawed lemonade stands now. My kids fear the police will raid them for not having a health inspection, paying taxes, business permit, etc...

My dad worked for law enforcement when I was growing up ... we were always told that it wasn't safe. I always wanted to though.

I didn't have one since I live out in the country and out here there is just not enough business though I did walk miles to sell raffle tickets and merchandise for band and the school library would have done it for Latin club but our sponsor was sick and couldn't get the orders straightened out we could have handled the orders ourselves if the school rules hadn't prevented us because of our being minors

If you didn't have a lemonade stand as a kid at least ONCE, you're totally missing out. The excitement when someone STOPS for you, at such an age, is so exhilarating and empowering for a child.

When my mom had her yard sale, I would set up the lemonade stand to sell to thirsty customers on hot days. It was a pretty good business for a kid XD

I grew up in NYC, so that really wasn't something I did. I think this kid has a great attitude though. I'm surprise the government hasn't shut him down and ordered him to pay taxes. Unfortunately, I've heard of this sort of thing (the government intervening) happening before.

I remember a news article about a lttle girl who had a lemonade stand but it was shut down because she didn't have an expensive permit to sell goods on public ground. I'm glad these kids weren't held back by the police and their stupid bureaucracy.

Lemonade causes diabetes and other illnesses due the sugar contained in it. Only freshly squeezed juices without any sugar are healthy for events. Upgrade your intelligence, and please educate children about the danger of sugar. Live intelligent! lemonade

Natalia is wrong. Lemonade and let alone sugar does not cause diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a disorder of the human immune system that makes it difficult for the body to produce insulin. Without insulin, the body cannot convert sugar from food into nutrients for cells. "Excess" sugar builds up in the blood stream and may eventually cause severe damage to organs and premature death. And that is why diabetics use insulin on a daily basis, so they can consume foods as well as some sweetened drinks, as well as watching a healthy diet, so they can live. I know I have researched this since my father has diabetes and a very close friend on my son has diabetes. The only really safe sugar substitute is Splenda. My father uses it in his coffee, and now drinks diet coke, since the started producing it that way. Most of the time He drinks water, which is better than anything else for you. My fathe also has a sweet tooth, so I use either splenda or unsweetened applesause, for baking.

You are right, anything in excess is not good, but sugar still does not cause diabetes.

It was the thing to do back when I was a kid. :) A few friends and I actually partnered up and built a stand out of wood and then each day was a different 'partners' turn to have the stand and we all worked at that person's house. Was fun for about a month. :)
