Nike’s ‘Find Your Greatness Ad’: Awful or Amazing?

If you’ve been watching the Olympics, you’ve probably seen a Nike ad featuring an overweight boy slowly jogging down a country road. The commercial starring 12-year-old Nathan Sorrell, who is 5-foot-3-inches tall and weighs 200 pounds, is part of a campaign that salutes the everyday fitness feats of ordinary people from “Londons” around the world. Nathan, who was discovered during a Nike scouting session at his school, is from London, Ohio.

As Nathan approaches the camera, a voiceover says: “Greatness. It’s just something we made up. Somehow we've come to believe that greatness is a gift reserved for a chosen few—for prodigies, for superstars—and the rest of us can only stand by watching. You can forget that. Greatness is not some rare DNA strand. It’s not some precious thing. Greatness is no more unique to us than breathing. We're all capable of it. All of us."

Many viewers have fallen in love with Nathan and think the ad is incredibly inspiring. Their comments on YouTube thank Nathan for his bravery, encourage him to continue exercising, and call him a hero. Others, however, strongly dislike the commercial and have accused Nike of exploiting an obese child. They argue that if Nike were actually interested in inspiring the world, they would have helped Nathan lose weight and then show the results.

It’s unclear whether Nike will be supporting Nathan’s efforts to get in shape, but according to the Record Herald, if he’s successful, the company will return for another taping to reinforce its message.

So, what do you think SodaHeads? Is Nike’s “Find Your Greatness” ad, starring Nathan Sorrell, awful or amazing?

Although I think it could have been shot differently, sure it's a great message- but I think if they focused on the boy's feet while he was running and then panned up to him at the very end- then I think it would be more of an impact. Just watching the boy running toward the camera while trying to focus on the VO doesn't communicate very effectively to me, something seems 'off' about it. But it's a great campaign redirection for Nike.

I watched this commercial and my first thought was. "You have to start somewhere sometime". If this commercial does nothing else, I hope it gets our children outdoors to play. Our children spend too much time playing with electronics and watching television. Meanwhile, there is a world outside they are missing out on.

I love the ad. I think it says a lot. I think it shows Nike believes you can become your greatest no matter who you are. Very few ads really speak with inspiration like that one. Way to go, Nike! :)

Truly awful. The poor kid won't lose weight doing that. He'll probably have a heart attack.

How do you know he won't? This is why so many people stay obese because they have everyone telling them they can't do it, it brings them down, they believe it & give up!

Not that I can speak for another person, but I think the point being made is, when you are that obese, running/jogging is pretty much the worst thing you can do as far as exercising to lose weight.

    No doctor would recommend it.

His first step should be diet alteration coupled with something like cycling, swimming, or at most walking. Running/jogging at that level of obesity is putting stresses on his body that could damage it seriously for life. If his goal is to be healthy in the long term, massive risks of permanent debilitating injuries probably aren't the best way to go.

He probably will.. And I agree, how do you know? I've seen it happen before, and anything is possible if you sit your mind to doing it.

I agree... although diet is important. Nothing is going to burn those calories like exercise. I think every doctor would rather have him run than just sit around. Let's face it, how many 12 year olds sit and figure out what is the best plyos for themselves? Not many adults know the various exercises. They do what they know and most likely that is run. Greatness has a starting point. And isn't measured by gold medals, dollars, or trophies. Measure it by heart... it takes a lot of heart for an overweight person to say "i'm going to put on some running shoes and go run"

First time I've seen this. Good for this kid, he's trying to improve himself. He doesn't seem to be waiting for Nike to fix his life- he's addressing his own issues himself. He is a man already!

"We have become to believe that greatness is for a chosen few . Greatness is not some rare DNA strand."

Because these days our kids are being taught no one stands out for being the best. Trophies for everyone. Ribbons for everyone. It is what liberals push, we are all equal. The whole social justice thing.

"greatness" isn't in DNA. It's not implying what you explained at all. It's saying if you want to be amazing at something, you have to put in effort to get it done, "greatness" isn't handed to you at birth.

Go Nathan. No one can exploit a willing person, and he chose to do the commercial. I think he is an inspiration to fat kids everywhere. Maybe watching him more will get off the computer and video games and go outside.
