If women can serve in the military and shoot a weapon at someone they have never met dodging return fire and dealing with the hazards of hidden explosives then why the heck not? If the skill is there then why in the world would you waste it?

You might have a point if women were in equal numbers on the front line...

Well I didn't see where it said women referees would necessarily equal men in number on the field. So far I believe this is just one? Was just sayin' ...

And after reading some of the above comments I can see some of the logic- while realizing at the same time we are mostly dealing here with reasoning not quite under the logic envelope, as such is the nature of human emotion. But regarding men's and women's roles being separate:
It was quite a few years ago I had a flat on the freeway. Happened at night (...of course, right?) - OK well I was able to set things up and do most of the change myself as sixteen-wheelers whizzed by BUT - when that Highway Patrol car finally did pull up behind me, stop and offer to turn on their headlights to help me see to finish up, it did not bother me ONE BIT that it was a lady officer. In a way it was kind of pleasant. Relatively speaking. Point was the purpose was served. I was no longer in line for getting flattened and I could see if I forgot a lug nut or whatever. I was grateful for the service. Gender made no difference. All I'm saying.

No reason she can't be a good referee. On a related note, all referees should be required to have 20/20 eyesight. All of them.

If you are saying she is a distraction I am assuming you mean sexually, but in all honesty, who says ever football player is straight? Because they aren't :o) Just sayin.

I'm a soccer ref and fan. We had two good-looking women refereeing in the men's league in California. Neither one started out on top, but became pretty good. That being said, the last thing I want to see when trying to enjoy a game of skill and testosterone, is a cute ass running up and down the side line or wiggling around the center of the pitch - VERY DISTRACTING! Nuf said.

I think women are too susceptible to certain kinds of injuries to be in such a physical activity. And they can not be as physical as can a man. 5' 4"...120 pounds...36-24-38...blond-blu... fellows, -stop fighting-or else...ouch!,-please get off me...OK?"

Place a 6'2" 40-year-old male referee in a football game and I bet he wouldn't last two seconds in a fight against one of the players, either, but no one's gonna say HE shouldn't be a referee. All you need to be a good referee is knowledge of the sport, good eyesight, and a really loud whistle - and I bet there are lots of women who have all those things.

As long as the individual is capable and trained, I don't see a problem with it.

These words are subjective, not necessarily objective. Who gets to decide who is capable and trained? (Inside "pc" folks, that's who.) I refereed plenty of adult soccer games. There's always and exception, but in general I don't want 'em in my game.

When female refs get screamed at for botching a call, watch the feminist groups complain that it's because of sexism.

Assuming competence, yes. The league needs good officials and shutting out half the population makes no sense. It also helps break down stereotypes.

What's the problem? A ref has to have a good eye and knowledge of the game. They need to be able to move around quickly, and sometimes get out of the way, but there's no real physical labor involved. There's no reason a woman can't do all that just as well as a man.

Sure, but I hope they realize it's going to be an insanely uphill battle, with rampant sexism and machoism from the players. Most of the women I know can definitely hold their own when it comes to physical things, but 300 pound men wearing pounds of football pads and barreling down on each other without regard to where the refs are is very hazardous to anyone, so I hope that precautions are taken and the women go into the job knowing this can happen. I would assume they would tho.
