New York City May Ban Sodas Larger Than 16 Ounces: Smart or Stupid?

Bad news, soda lovers. New York City may ban sodas and other sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces in a first-in-the-nation move meant to battle obesity. "More than half of NYC adults (58%) are overweight or obese," Mayor Michael Bloomberg tweeted on Thursday. "We're doing something about it."

soda ban

The ban would outlaw drinks larger than 16 ounces at restaurants and other eateries, but not grocery stores. And the Board of Health is expected to OK the proposal in the coming months, which would mean a $200 fine for establishments that violate the ban. "Restaurant owners will have nine months from the adoption of the proposal until they face fines," Bloomberg's office said in a statement.

The CDC's National Center for Health Statistics says sugary drinks "have been linked to poor diet quality, weight gain, obesity, and, in adults, type 2 diabetes." And let's face it: In the U.S., a "large" soda often looks more like an extra extra large. Sixteen ounces seems like more than enough. Do you agree? Or do you want the food police to leave you alone?

Stupid. Just buy two. We do not elect our government officials to take care of us as if we're too stupid to do so ourselves. We elect them to protect and preserve our freedom. Utterly ridiculous.

Actually neither. It's pretty useless. You can still order two large ones, and still have the same amount of soda as a supersized one.

But only because the law only addresses part of the problem. If a substance is banned in restaurants on the grounds of its potential harm to the public, why is it available in grocery stores?
Is it a badly-written law, or did the grocery store lobby have more $$$, or both? This is a law begging for challenges in more ways than one. It will create more problems than it solves.

Re. the regulation of sugar (a whole different issue), I don't get why we control/regulate the consumption of addictive and/or potentially dangerous substances like alcohol, prescription/illegal drugs, certain nutritional supplements, etc., and don't control the sugars and fats which have created the current epidemic of obesity, diabetes, heart problems, joint problems, and (often) behavioral problems.

I guess if you expect people to make sense, you'll just be disappointed.

Why is it when this type of question comes around that some people use that argument?
Don't the "Fat Asses" pay taxes too? If you pay the same amount of taxes, whose taxes are more beneficial?
Using your argument style I could also say that I don't want the money taken out of my check to go towards your SS checks when you retire.

Because people think that being fat is solely due to gluttony and lack of self control. Most of the times that's the only cause.

    Dang liberals.

Besides you ever order a soda larger than 16 ounce? It is all ice with a can of soda poured in.

Genius move Bloomberg! Thank all that is holy that we have the smart people running our cities, states and country because you know some idiot might come along and want to ban salt from restaurants or give 500 million to a company going backrupt. We are thankful we put you in charge of the city!

A better idea is to allow insurance companies to refuse or drop coverage for fat people and to allow employers to fire people for fat related reasons.

Part of living in a country where we are free is allowing people to do things that may not be the best for them. While I feel like society needs to be taught concepts of self restraint and moderation, to force a society into a particular way of doing things without their consent is only going to back fire.
