New York City Introduces Adult Playgrounds: Brilliant or Bad Idea?

New York City has adopted yet another initiative to improve health and reduce obesity. At least this one doesn’t involve banning soda.

Over the next 18 months, as many as 24 adult-only playground are set to open across the five boroughs. They won’t have swings or slides—they are essentially outdoor gyms—but they will maintain the look and feel of traditional kid’s play spaces. (In some cases, the equipment will be built by the same manufacturers.)

While outdoor fitness areas have recently been gaining popularity in the US, they have long been commonplace in China and parts of Europe. New York City has been testing the concept at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx, and so far it has been incredibly successful.

Unlike gyms, these adult playgrounds are free to use and they are able to pass exercise off as play. And from the city’s perspective, they are much cheaper to build than children’s playgrounds. However, we have to wonder if these parks will end up serving the people who need them the most or if they’ll just be overrun by gym rats.

Bus driver Daren Trapp, an observer at Macombs Dam Park, told The New York Times, “Oh no, I’m past my prime. It’s out in the open, and I guess I’m a private individual.”

What do you think SodaHeads? Are adult playgrounds brilliant or a bad idea?

I'd like them if they were actual playgrounds. An actual adult sized playground would be amazing. I have no interest in working out at a gym in the heat of the day. It is a good idea perhaps, but I just want to be able to play on an adult sized Discovery Zone!

It will be a gathering place for drug dealing/using and then the city will wonder what happened and then close the place.

Why not? As long as it helps reduce obesity then I think it's a pretty good idea.

I think this is a good idea because people like to have a choice, And, like you said, it's not like telling people that they cannot have a diet Dr Pepper, and a cinnamon roll. beats the hell out of Banning come on noon York, give people a choice

I know how many people hurt themselves in gyms each day using nothing but bad technique; the idea of an uncontrolled space where there are no trainers to potentially save their shoulders/back/hips/whatever scares the hell out of me.

I would like to see how children will be prevented from playing there. Surely, at some point, adults will bring their children there simply because it is there and the kids are pointing at it and dragging mommy/daddy over to it.

Furthermore, is more likely that these places will be overrun with alpha wankers who like to show off in public ( Think Muscle Beach ) and not the intended demographic - fat folks.

btw - Yes, I work out. But I do so to make me feel good, not to make the morbidly obese feel insecure.

Though the picture doesn't look like anyone is "playing," they are all working out... Soooo...??? I would say these grounds are mislabeled.
If you have fun you don't feel like you're working out, even though you're climbing and runnning around, so maybe make a real PLAYground for adults? With obstacle course items, large dome (monkey bar style) and... tall slides (haha). Definitely made with large tires, they're always the best.
    I love playgrounds.

The essence of the playground is enjoyable movement - merry-go-round (though motion sickness might be a problem), some kind of single or multiple-person teeter-totter, incredible slides (just imagine the cool, multi-level slides that should already exist), jungle gyms, etc. Kids' playground equipment could also become so much more fun and adults could find "working out" addictive, just like it is for kids. I suppose this would be more like an "exercise-park"...similar to water parks, only cheaper and probably more fun.

Never liked the idea and never will seeing an adult hanging off the monkey bars, it's normal for kids to have a playground (their young) but adults.....don't see it....nuh-uh. (my opinion) ps. I would look wrong in a playground, I mean, I'm like, 14 and my parents are 38-39 years old, and seeing them on a playground....I would pretend not to know them. //////////

Ok,you don't have to loo and you can grow old if you want to at 14. Plus, it is an adult playground so you shouldn't be there anyway.

Its cool to be around 20s and having the parents young :) But i can understand people that have a baby almost at 40; they just make sure they are stable finnancially before deciding to be parents.

if the worst thing that can be said about them is that people who already exercise are the most likely to use them while couch potatoes may shun them, it sounds like a winning idea.

in 2008, when the belt-tightening began, the gym membership was probably among the first things to bite the dust - so those "gym rats" can get their fixes again.
and, who knows, even the occasional sloth may try a jungle gym here, a monkey bar there, and a new habit may be born. stranger things have happened . . . .

Adults need places to get exercise other than having to pay huge fees for a fancy gym membership.

And no matter how "cost effective" they are, it's still a waste of money in my opinion.

Those who are going to exercise are going to exercise, whether there's an outdoor "gym" or not. Whether it's free or not.

It's a little gimmicky in my opinion.

Waste of money? How so? If I had a play to go to to work-out like that where I live, I'd go. I can't afford a gym.

We used to have little stations like that posted around several of our lakes here in Minneapolis. I say used to, they took them all down due to them not being used. It cost more to maintain them, than to put them up.

I hope it's not a waste of money but I just think the novelty will wear off and they won't get the use the city is hoping for. Simply my opinion based on experience.

Dude I will still go to the park and swing around on tr monkey bars. It's great exercise and shows me that I can still do what I could as a 4-year-old. If I can't anymore it means I'm desperately in need of a gym membership.
