New Studies Cite Stronger Link Between Soda and Obesity: Do You Drink Soda?

According to the New England Journal of Medicine's recent study, there is a very strong link between sugar-sweetened beverages (i.e. soda) and America's obesity epidemic. Dr. David Ludwig of Boston Children's Hospital's New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center told the Chicago Tribune there is no doubt what is the greatest cause of obesity in America.

"The most effective single target for an intervention aimed at reducing obesity is sugary beverages." If that is truly the case, there is a big problem. Millions of Americans consume soda. In fact, sugary beverages almost go hand-in-hand when it comes to watching movies and live events. However, steps have been taken to limit soda intake.

Most schools across the country have practically banned soda from students' drink choices during lunchtime. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg helped pass the controversial law that will ban supersized sugary drinks from being sold. And fitness gurus such as DDPYoga founder Dallas Page have gone as far to say soda is the worst thing you can put in your body when trying to stay healthy. These observations and studies may cut into soda companies' profits, but swaying a majority of Americans to stop consuming these beverages could take awhile.

I try to do it sparingly, but yes. Personally I figure that a big dent could be made by limiting the amount of sugar per serving of soft drinks, things like Pepsi Next give some credence to the thought that perhaps we don't need quite so much sugar and high fructose corn syrup in our soda.

I don't drink soda because I think it makes you older faster. Makes you get fat and sluggish, and probably eats away at your insides or even make you a diabetic.
I think the Mormons got this one right. AVOID SODAS! Most young people don't think about stuff like this when they have their youth. Cut it off at the pass and push back age as long as possible. I think you are very smart for avoiding such beverages. I do love my red wine though!!! Shame on me!

Isn't a bit of red wine good for the heart though?

Yes... but if you really want the benefits you should end up taking a pill rather then drinking.

I do not drink soda or any fruit juices. When I cut all that out, I lost about 20 lb. in a few weeks, without doing anything else differently.

I have proven the truth of the study to myself. Your intelligence may vary.

Couldn't live without it. However, I think the relationship between soda/weight is genetic, or even 'liking' soda for that matter. I've drank soda every day of my life and I've never been obese or overweight. My grandkids drank colas up until they reached their teens and now they drink water. Go figure!

This is such a simple solution to the obesity epidemic - stop drinking gallons of liquid sugar every day. If you don't believe me and you're overweight - don't change a thing except to stop drinking soda - easy to do right? I guarantee you will lose weight. GUARANTEE...no one wants to be overweight - do it for yourself. Like soda too much to quit? - drink club soda!
