Pro-life leaders are concerned over a new pre-natal test that researchers claim will allow doctors to screen pre-born babies for thousands of genetic defects. The concern grows that parents would make decisions to kill their babies before they would even know for sure anything about the child. The procedure currently is said to not be affordable to make it practical for clinic or hospital use according to the New York Times.
The concern over such procedures raise serious concerns. LifeSiteNews.com reports,
Trisomy 21, or Down Syndrome, is one of the more common of these disorders, and has been at the center of the debate over pre-natal testing. Senator Rick Santorum, whose daughter, Bella, has Down Syndrome, was a vocal opponent of an ObamaCare provision funding prenatal testing for pregnant women. Santorum spoke out against the proposal during his bid for the Republican nomination, citing selective abortions as the reason for his opposition.
“Yes, prenatal testing, amniocentesis does in fact result more often than not in abortion. That is a fact,” Santorum told CBS News. Josephine Quintavalle of Pro-Life Alliance, a UK-based organization, told the London Telegraph, that “one always hopes, vainly, that in utero testing will be for the benefit of the unborn child.” However she quickly added, “this new test may not itself be invasive, given our past track record, it is difficult to imagine that this new test will not lead to more abortions.”
Will our society ever learn? Will we not decide that life is more important than scientific advancement for the purpose of extinguishing it? It seems that America is following the road that so many societies have gone down and instead of becoming a culture of life, we are becoming a culture of death. God help us.
