New Net Laws: Trust Government to Regulate the Internet?

Politicians want to win re-election by looking good to their constituents. They herald new laws, regulations, guidelines and policies in the name of protecting the people, helping the little guy or saving us from calamity. However, government often passes the same law over-and-over again -- the law of unintended consequences.

Government doesn't understand technology enough to legislate or regulate it. They cannot keep up with the dynamic nature and rapid progress of technology. By the time the politicians have committees, get consulted and think they know, the technology changes. Their laws create burdens for businesses and criminals ignore the law anyway. The laws end up hurting consumers, businesses and internet users more than they help.

Read this editorial from PCWorld about some new laws on the way that will hurt the Internet.Think what Congress and state legislatures do is boring? Read on to see what Internet and/or privacy rights you might lose if some of this misguided legislation passes.

The internet grew out of the military systems from DARPA and the inter-university communication system Usenet. It is now international, commercial and personal, so any laws/regulations need to recognize these current realities. Politicians don't know enough about it to make good rules.

To politicians it is all about control.
If the citizens gain any benefits that is just a lucky coincidence.

The question here should be 1., who benifits, 2. who will it effect, 3. what does it accomplish 4. who sponsored and lobbied it, 5. why do we need it? and 7. who, which party legislators support it. Then take action for or against it and its sponsors. This way we should get good legislation. Regarding lagging behind technology and reactive legislation, adequately fund a program that addresses this shortfall, in other words don't cut off the hand to spite your face. IMO. What is best for the nation not the corporations pockets

Forget our own federal American government... worse, you have a very suspect UN attempting to get involved w/ intrusive regulation...

this is kind of hard to read, so stick w/ it...

Turn it over to Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, and Maxine Waters . . . Maybe they can clean it up the same way that they fixed the Mortgage Problems with the Banks and Fanni Mae, and Freddi Mac. Three Brilliant American Government Employees.

maybe, dead persons and illegals? Many states such as Florida are trying to purge their voting rosters, and the Feds sue... go figure.

Then the concept of voter Id laws... sanctioned by the US Supreme Court... and being hardily fought against by current admin...

they can't be trusted to agree on what to have for lunch, why trust them to look out for the little guy, whom they consider -at best- to need a big brother to wipe their noses?

    Oh heck no!
I'm almost at the point where I think each state should just quit the country and call their own shots. I'm frankly tired of congress and their "good ole boy" attitude. They get richer and we get poorer.
