New Airline Trays Double as TVs: Cool or Cluttered?

Whenever we're on an airplane, we struggle with performing as many tasks as possible in a tiny spot.

But a new gadget may make this just a bit easier for you.

A system called called TrayVu delivers in-flight entertainment on the back of your meal
tray, eliminating the need for a separate tray and monitor, The New York Daily News reports.

meal tray eliminating separate tray monitor york daily news reports

The system -- unveiled at this week's Airline Passenger Experience Expo in Seattle -- offers HD resolution on an 8.9 inch screen and uses a touch-screen keypad, according to the paper.

Movies, TV shows, games, shopping, multiple passenger gaming, destination offers, and more are available on the wi-fi enabled device.

And here's more good news for tech-addicted fliers. Virgin America has confirmed a deal with Lufthansa Systems to allow passengers to connect their own devices to the plane's entertainment system.

Appropriately enough, the new system is called the "nerdbird."

Now if only they would do something about the food. How about serving some, for starters?

    1. The price of your ticket just went up.

    2. The trays are small enough as they are, let alone adding more functionality to them.

    3. On the rare occasion that I do fly, I like to... wait for it... read a book! or sleep.

I can do without the gadgets.

Well, since they don't serve food any longer, why not. So are they going to charge extra for using the damn things?

    Very fun things but:

    1. Little kids and clumsy people and just gonna destroy these with their lemonade.
    2. It's way too cluttered, and they should be on the back of the seat. (even if I always get a gorilla behind me who punches the chair several times to watch a film.)

I like how Buffalo Wild Wings allows you to play games against other guests. It would be kind of cool playing games against other fliers

    SIGH ..

SO .. needless to say ...
NO Food .. Higher Prices .. a TV Screen that I can NOT even /see/ ...
and then there's the horror of having to go through TSA prior to even entering the aircraft ..
The CRAMPED SEATS (Which were not made for a taller than average female anyways) ..
Dealing with the one in front of you lowering the back of their seat (so that tray is painful on one's knees anyways)

And then I'd have to deal with some idiot pressing games (or messaging) and beeping for that too?

    GOOD GRIEF ..

The trays are totally pointless because everyone knows that the minute you are at cruising altitude that jerk off in front of you is going to suddenly and without warning recline his seat totally back into your lap, and you won't be able to open the damn tray anyway, much less have a meal or a place to put your little plastic soda glass.

Its cool but its not going to happen anytime soon. I'm still waiting for all planes to have power outlets at each seat for laptops. I've been on 1 plane with it and I fly anywhere from 10-20 times a year. I'm flying to Savannah Saturday and I'm pretty sure they won't have power at my seat. Lame.

The more distractions, the better the ride. I like the personal choices, vs. cabin movies.

what am i missing here? every international flight i have taken over the last 10 years has had a unit like that in the back of the seat - except the tray was solid and sitting below the tv unit. Are we making a song and dance because they have integrated the two together now???

So what? I first saw TVs in seatbacks about 8 years ago.

I was contacted by an airline several years ago about the viability and security of several new proposed offerings, including rental laptops and/or batteries, fast recharging kits, movie and game rentals, and my personal favorite: an in-flight chat system where you could chat with any other passengers who were logged on.

Expect those to become commonplace someday. :)

No functionality is gained here. 777's have a screen mounted behind the headrest and a separate tray, which I think I would prefer. On long flights (I've taken many of the world's longest flights), this would give you nothing but neck pain.

Durability is the test in the airline business. I don't see these standing up.
