The U.S. Navy's new class of carriers will be the first to go without urinals, a decision made in part to give the service flexibility in accommodating female sailors, the Navy says.

The change heralded by the Gerald R. Ford class of carriers starting with the namesake carrier due in late 2015 is one of a number of new features meant to improve sailors' quality of life and reduce maintenance costs, Capt. Chris Meyer said Wednesday. Do you think the Navy is stronger by being "gender neutral"?

I think the Navy is looking for a way to save money and paying for equipment that is only designed for men is a waste of money, whether a guy pees in a urinal or a toilet he is still a guy.

We're talking about the Navy here, not the Army or the Marines. How would a male be any better at pushing buttons on a ship than a female? And, if you think about it, women eat less, drink less, and take up less space. If we simply look at maximization, maybe the Navy should be predominantly female and the Army should be predominantly male.

I actually served aboard 2 Navy ships, one of which had 300 women in the crew of 1100. Shipboard life is physically demanding, especially for enlisted personnel. Food has to be slid down slides and caught, then pushed along rollers, 50 lbs at a time. I worked in the Engine Room, which meant we had to lift heavy valves, weighing half as much as we did, up 2 story ladders. Then, there are anchor chains that have to be carried by hand, 2-inch thick mooring lines that have to be roped to piers, firefighting equipment that has to be carried into place. When at sea, operations have to continue while the sea tosses the ship from side-to-side. It is a physically demanding environment, and it tears up the best bodies! When confronted with the hardest work, most women get out of it. Many aren't even physically able to do it, even if they wanted to.

No, that's ridiculous! How can any country's armed forces be made stronger by encouraging weaker people to enlist?

I mean, not gender-neutral. I'm pretty sure having women on-board in the Navy does not contrast with having urinals. I thought it was about adding, not removing.

PS: Yes, I am a supporter of women in the army. I don't see the Israelis complaining.

Only because I think men should use sitting down toilets anyway. Why can't they have both? I think both genders should be equal in social respects, but genders have different ways of relieving their bladders, that has nothing to do with gender neutrality.

    And, Sorry ~

    Call me 'oldschool', but

women, in the military, does NOT

invoke a sign of strength, in my opinion...

They have no business being in 'battle' mode,

unless it's ABSOLUTELY necessary, and it's NOT !

Two questions: How does denying the differences in the genders make us "stronger"? and When did the feminists start deciding how we build our warships? This ridiculously delusional liberalism (is there any other kind?) has to stop.

There are physical differences between men and women. You must accommodate for that. If you want to accommodate to the higher percentage of females serving aboard the ships, simply make different bathrooms, one for men, and one for women. It's as simple as that. It's like that in every public restroom. What is this country coming to?

It's fine by me to remove urinals for reasons of not having enough space. What I am disturbed by is their reason to remove these urinals, not because of lack of space but because they want to be "gender-neural"
I fully recognize that Navy ships aren't the roomiest, but their reasons for this is disgusting.

At General Quarters, the guys out on deck can run to the leeward side and fill the ocean, while all target sighting equipment is still aimed at any potential hostiles. If the gals did this, we might have to re-target on any hostiles. Only the army and air force would go to the windward side, twice!

There has to be some things that have to stay distinctly male in the Navy. Iron men and Wooden ships have given way to this P.C. bilge. Are they now going to change the shape of their torpedoes and submarines next because of its phallic reference?

Gender neutral? They have different standards for their HAIR yet the Navy removes urinals in the name of gender equality?

Reduce maintenance costs simple means this: Cut the number of bathrooms in half. It has nothing to do with the genders, only the money. Not sure how having them all pee in the same room regardless of gender IMPROVES quality of life.

Yeah, there's that too. Especially if they are performing the same job.
