Natural or organic weed killers...

Deliciously Melicious 2012/07/03 18:04:51
Do you know of any natural or organic weed killing techniques that won't harm the plants I do want growing?

I don't know what's up with this year, but the weeds in my veggie garden are out of control, and it seems like I can't keep up with them.

Ideas and advice?

Look on the bright side......weeds won't grow in lousy oil. Strong weeds means rich soil. And, if it will kill weeds, it will kill PLANTS....of any kind.

    Advice......use the Armstrong method

Actually, weeds will grow in lousy soil. They'll grow in almost anything. I've got clovers and long grass popping up in pure peat moss, which is so nutrient-poor that only plants that *need* poor soil (like carnivorous plants) actually grow there.

If you do a full weeding and then cover the newly-weeded ground with straw, it'll stop new weed from seeding, rooting, and coming up.

Thanks Yuki. I also read that corn meal helps??

I've never tried corn meal, sorry. :( Also, I don't know how it would help-- it'd just add what few nutrients it contains back into the soil, is my way of thinking. You could try an inch to two-inch layer of pure sand, which looks nicer than straw/hay. It'd protect and insulate the plants already put down, water would drain down to the roots of those plants quickly, it won't get moldy like hay, and you'd only ever get one or two weeds for every square foot, and they'd be weak, nutrient and water-deprived (because water would drain from the sand too quickly to allow easy absorption by young seedlings), and easy to pick.

No, it can actually make damping off worse. Mulch with straw/hay/sheep mulch....solves a number of problems for seedlings.

I've been an organic gardener for decades....I also have a friend with a commercial organic farm. I just go by what she and I have learned over the years. I disagree with some of the stuff in that article.

Could you explain damping off? What does this mean?
  • bags th... Delicio... 2012/07/03 19:29:29

damping off is when new sprouts are attacked by mildew or other fungus caused by moist conditions and die before they ever get their first true leaves out.

Ahhh... but would this be a problem in a dry climate? If cornmeal keeps the soil moist, could it be good??

    moisture is fine.....mildew/fungus is not.

    So, cornmeal causes mildew/fungus?

it absorbs moisture and holds it and provides a good medium for molds and fungus.

Hmmm... I wonder though if it would help rather than hinder in dry climates. I live in the dessert, so it is always a battle.

Corn meal feeds the earthworms you need.

*I* definitely don't need earthworms. :S Earthworms are a pest, in my garden!

But that's great to know, if I ever start something with vegetables, etc.

Cornmeal prevents weed seeds from germinating when sprinkled on the soil. It's best to wait until after your seeds sprout to make sure the cornmeal doesn't harm your new plants. In addition to its weed control properties, cornmeal attracts worms, which loosen up the soil.

Interesting. I didn't know that. :) Live and learn! I've only ever used the straw-hay and sand method.
