The National Grid PLc has reported that a horrendous snow and ice storm has knocked out power to nearly 1 million homes and businesses all across New York and New England. The National Grid has also informed their customers that it may take several days to restore the power. Roads have had to been shut and Government offices have also closed. Neighboring state, Massachusetts, has sent help, via 500 National Guard troops to clear roads and help residents.

Think about having to live without power for a couple days, in the winter, in New York... are you prepared?

Do you have enough supplies not to starve, and to stay warm?

Not as well as I should be. We have a gas fireplace and campstoves with fuel, but I think I need to stock up on food and beverages. And maybe a few more blankets, just in case. And ammo, lots of ammo, in case anyone tries to steal what is mine.

I live in N. Y. and ice storms are always the worst!! It weighs down the power lines & surrounding trees and it causes tremendous damage. Although the ice does look beautiful on the trees!! It's cold out so a cooler with the contents of the refrigerator can be placed outdoors, always make sure that you have propane for your barbeque. I'm fortunate as we have a fireplace and we can stay in that room to keep warm.
It's usually the elderly that have the most risk!!! outdoors propane barbeque fortunate fireplace stay room warm elderly risk

I do'nt live in the northeast, but yes i am ready---the house functions off natural gas. So as long as that supply is stable---no problem. Have everything else also. Can last 3 months, if not more.

My answer should be more "yes and no". I have food, water, flashlights, led lights and booklights, candles and buckets filled with water for other uses. The only area I come up short is heat. I do have a lot of blankets and even microfleece sheets on my bed so I think I would do ok. I even have light up crochet hooks and knitting needles to help keep me from getting bored at night LOL (and yes they really do work!!)

I just went through this (live in New York State) and it lasted 15 hours and it's not fun in the winter. This is the longest one in awhile cause of the ice. You are right, many people still don't have power. Maybe it;s time for a generator?

No, sad to say, I am not prepared for an outage. I have on several occasions threatened to buy one (a generator) before hell freezes over but if I keep going the way I am now, I think hell may freeze over a couple of times before I get one. I really think I may get one before the 1st of the year, though. They are going to be very useful, next year, I'm afraid! Chuck Gilliam

We won a power generator a couple of years ago, and if worse comes to worst we can always stay in our camper for a few days. Plenty of heat there.

The longest I've gone without power was about a week after a huge storm a few years ago. That was in September though, so it wasn't like it was ridiculously cold or anything. I think I'd survive even in the middle of winter. I'm sure some people would see it as instant death, but people survived for thousands of years without electricity, and I'm sure we can go without it for a few weeks.
