Natasha Hill of Los Angeles, CA, has decided it would be best if the public actually decided the name of her baby for her. The Belly Ballot winner of $5,000 was notified on the 26th of February that the world will post ideas and vote on her baby's name from March 18th to the 22nd.

Hill seems excited about the idea, calling it "social" and "fun," but opposers are claiming it to be "irresponsible parenting" and "commercializing". It's really up to the mother to decide how she names her baby, but could this be a case of bambino embezzlement?

    The choice is hard to make for few parents--but not in my history (two daughters)--and they probably would not get money for David or John, Mary or Sally, Susan or James, Jessica or Jacob. So without seeing actual deals made, this question is ignorant. stupid questions

    I actually can't say either way. Parents SHOULD name their child and take time to give them a name of meaning. Our names are a part of out identity. But on the other hand, the child may end up with a better name having so many people contribute ideas. I have heard of some pretty crazy names, including "Orangello" and "Lemongello" because- the mother happend to have orange jello on her tray for one, and lemon jello on her tray for the other. I rest my case.

    If she's fine with the idea of total strangers naming her child for her, the I don't see what the big deal it. She couldn't think up a name on her own, so she's getting help from others. Just as long as it's a decent name,and not something bizarre like "Buttercup Milkshakes O'Brian" or "Marijuana Pepsi Jackson"
    Besides, What's in a name? That which we call a rose would still smell as sweet.

    She can name her baby however she wants, and if the name is embarrassing she doesn't have to use it. In any case, the child will have an interesting story to tell about how he or she was named. The only creepy part is that advertisers will be selecting some of the names. You don't want your son to end up being named Microsoft.

    I wouldn't go so far as to call it "irresponsible parenting," because at the end of the day it's just a name. But still, in my opinion, naming your baby is a personal matter between parents, not something to make money from.

    According to the article (which a lot of the voters here likely never bothered to even look at) there will be a list of potential names for people to vote on. What names are on the list? Who made/approved the list? That info is not given. It is not like she is taking $5k from some random person and obligating to name her baby whatever that person says.

    What's the problem? She's not obligated to accept anything. She doesn't have to name her baby Mergatroid or Blimpy or anything like that. But if gets names she likes and a little money, too, I see no problem.
