More Women Getting 'Mommy Tattoos': Sweet or Tacky?

You already know that Angelina Jolie has tattoos of the birthplace coordinates of all of her children. But now, "real" women (aka non-Hollywood) are following suit.

angie

Amber Adams, mother of six, has three tattoos that celebrate her three older children. "This is a sweet pea, and right here is the Z for her initial," she told KDFW Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth. "I call it my flower garden on my feet. I'll be able to tell [my kids], 'You know what? This is the reason I got this and this is why this is so special to me because you're special to me.'"

Adams' mom, however, wasn't a fan. "Very conservative so for me to have gotten a tattoo my mother about killed me," she told Fox 4.

In other celebrity tattoo news, Rihanna tweeted a photo of her latest tats: letters that spell out "Thug Life" across her knuckles in a pale pink ink.

riri

And Marc Anthony has honored his new girlfriend, Venezuelan model Shannon de Lima, with a new tattoo of the Statue of Liberty over his "Jennifer" wrist tat, TMZ reports (since de Lima "freed” him from his past).

Do you think "mommy tattoos" are a sweet way to celebrate a child? Or do they look kind of tacky, and, at times, trashy?

Sweet or tacky? the only options?
How about UNNECESSARY... But if you insist on getting a tat, better to have something "sweet" written about your child, than say, getting some random tat declaring your love for your latest boyfriend.. Or worst yet, thinking you are, and wanting to be a ghetto - hoodrat and having "Thug Life' written on your knuckles.
Dang. That only proves that you can take some folks out of the hood/trailerpark/ghetto, but you CAN'T take that trailerhood mentality out of them.
Rhianna - what a douche she's turned into.

FIRST OFF there's nothing wrong with being a truck driver or a sailor, but I'm from the old school. A girl with a tattoo reminds me of a either a truck driver or a sailor. They may look cool now but tattoo's get all wrinkled and squiggly and hard to read when you are old, laying in the hospital. truck driver sailor cool tattoos wrinkled squiggly read laying hospital

Tattoos, if they're done right, are beautiful. Getting permanent artwork on your body depicting love is sweet.

The tattoo is the mark of the soul. It can act as a window through which we can see inside, or it can be a shield to protect us from those who cannot see past the surface.
I have 6 tattoos and I am neither skanky, whorish, trailer trash nor any of the other aforementioned derogatory terms. I am a mother of 6 children, 6 grandchildren and also very intelligent and successful in my career. Everyone is entitled to express themselves as they see fit. Whether we agree with their means of expression is irrelevant and they should not be judged by small minded people. What it boils down to is respect.

No one needs a permanant identification mark to help others find their soul. It is true wonderful people get tattoos. It is also true wonderful people don't get tattoos. All human permutations of personality come with or without tattoos. Nothing radical there. What changes in time is perspective. I truly hope all receiving tattoos at 20 will be as enchanted with them at 60...How is the technology going on the temporary ones? A much better option even if they eventually "fade."

Lowlifes? So my grandfather and his ex- WWII shipmates who survived Pearl Harbor, then war in the Pacific. As well as his fellow Navy men who have tattoos depicting their time spent fighting at the risk of death for freedom... are lowlifes? Shame on you for lumping gangbangers and thugs into the same group as those who risked their lives and died for you.

Your grandfather was probably a pimp before the military drafted him. Try as he may to dodge, that draft net caught him like a Pacific cod!

most military men get tattoos AFTER serving. tattoos don't equal pimp lol that's just small minded talk

rofl... Well, they also connotate big, reckless, mean-spirited, uncompassionate, drunk, found-in-a-bar, honorably or dishonorably discharged serviceman. They are the mark of cold, hard, "tough" people. The unseemly kind one avoids.
  • synful90 LewisCrise 2012/03/01 23:32:23 (edited)
    synful90
You don't get out much. All the service men have them now and they should be applauded for risking their lives. I don't see you out there but I guess sitting on a soap box judging other people based on appearances is pretty much a full time job. I can't believe how closed minded people are over something so small as ink on skin lol cracks me up. I would die if I was that square. You're gonna tell me that someone doesn't have ink and is considered a great person then suddenly they get a tattoo and morph into an alcoholic loser ? What a theory... But whatever have your beliefs
  • LewisCrise synful90 2012/03/02 15:10:05

Well, I am not saying everyone with a tattoo is like that necessarily, but just in case I am less likely to befriend such a person. Especially if they are covered in them. Sigh* I guess it is just a regrettable decision on their part. They will certainly regret it when their skin gets old and loose. Ha

Agreed! Tattoos don't make the person, no more than clothes. Besides my neighbor has the most meaningful tattoo EVER! A series of numbers on his forearm... he said even if he had the chance, those will always be important to him.

Exactly there's nothing wrong with expressing yourself. if it means something to you and makes you happy so be it. i love the people on here that are so self righteous and judge on appearances. that makes them the lowlife snobby "squares" not the people with tattoos. i don't judge people for not having ink like me so who's worse?

My grandfather always told my brothers and cousins that if you were supposed to have a tattoo you would've been born with it on you, to this day none of my brothers or cousins have any tattoos.

    Do they wear clothes?
Do they consider the amish to be technophiles?
Do they shave or get haircuts?

How far should a reasonable person be expected to carry this notion that one should have everything one needs at birth and that anything else is something that one should not have?

life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, art...

Your attitude concerning what a disaster it is to 'waste' time and money on tattoos seems to indicate that you esteem money as more important than art and experience- everyone does not value the same things that you do, to the same degree that you do.

It's not pretty, seems trashy on women already losing their feminity unless you're a bike chick, live in a trailer, crazy, a slut or butch lesbian...it just seems brutally rough...next they'll want to wear a vial of blood around their necks like Jolie did.
