Sure, America has an obesity problem... but which states carry the epidemic most? According to recent statistics, Mississippi has the highest obesity rate in America, at 34.9 percent while Colorado has the lowest, at 20.7 percent of its adults being obese.

As far as regions, the obesity rate for the South was the highest -- at 29.5 percent, followed by the Midwest at 29 percent, then the Northeast at 25.3 percent and lastly the West at 24.3 percent. Do you think Southern comfort food is to blame for the higher obesity rates in the South?

Weather, social factors, education, etc... Recipe and cooking method does make a difference, but people have choices as to what they eat.

Deep frying, southern frying, and greasy BBQ are deeply embedded in the culture. Bacon is put into a lot of dishes also. Sweet tea is a dietary staple. Pork rinds and cracklins' are popular snacks.

It's not the food. It's the people who eat it.

Folks just need to eat right and exercise regularly. And enjoy the occasional "bad for you" things that you like. Moderation in all things including moderation; ya gotta have a blowout every once in a while.

Hush! Don't blame the food! It still takes a "person" to put it in the mouth. I may
be 20lbs overweight, from the South, but it is some of the best cooking you will ever eat!

Fatasses are to blame for obesity. You cant tell me that in this day and age you are not informed enough to know what is indulgent and or fatty food vs. what is healthy food. People are always looking for a way to sway personal responsibility for themselves.

"Oh I didn't make myself fat, McDonald's Made me fat" or "My son didn't become a psycho killer because of the way I raised him, Violent video games made him a psycho killer" or " My teen daughter isn't a pregnant whore because of me; it's from watching all those videos and TV reality shows"..If you are obese, chances are it's your own fault. Not your friggin thyroid, not hidden ingredients in your canned cheese. Own up and Grow up. why people are fat

PEOPLE who eat the food are to blame. Let's place the blame where it should be. The food doesn't force PEOPLE to eat it.

It's more food going in than coming out that's to blame.

And, of course, lack of exercise and laziness.

Eating fatty food while drinking cold beer allows the fat to congeal in your gut (you have a stick of butter or block of lard there), making digestion tougher.
Maybe why many Orientals drink hot tea (or warm sake),
keeps the fats liquid & the rest of dinner better mixed for digestion.
Brits are known to drink rather tepid ales, same rationale?

It isn't so much what you eat... as it is how MUCH you eat!

However, how much of WHAT will contribute!

Eating healthy stuff isn't enough... you have to control how much you eat! I see fat vegetarians... if you eat enough lettuce, you will look like an elephant.

Lets face it.... some of the larges animals on the planet are vegetarians.

That's because of the Food Chain. Takes 10 lb. of plants to make a pound of Herbivore, 10 lb. of herbivore to make a primary predator etc. Since herbivores don't have to move quickly to get fed they have the ability to get larger to avoid getting predated upon. It's usually the helpless or frail elderly that get taken by predation. This is an example of Evolution in Action.
