Many say that beauty pageants are outdated, but last night’s Miss America competition brought in some 8.3 million viewers—the most since 2004.

23-year-old Mallory Hagan, an Alabama native who has made Brooklyn, New York her home, clinched the crown and scholarship money on Saturday night. Hagan wowed the judging panel—which included Olympic gold-medal gymnast McKayla Maroney—with her tap dance routine to James Brown’s “Get Up Offa That Thing,” her off-the-shoulder white evening gown, and her black bikini.

Hagan moved to New York in 2008, attends the Fashion Institute of Technology, and hopes to work in global marketing for a cosmetics company. During her reign, Hagan will tackle the issue of child sexual abuse.

I only watch beauty pageants once in a blue moon, but I do enjoy them
whenever I'm able to watch them.

heres what I think: there boring, they mainly focus just on looks (I get enough of that through out the school year so ya im tired of it) and I cant relate to it (im not perfect like they say they are, im not model thin, and I cant do my makeup perfectly, and I really just don't care)

I've never been into gowns, makeup, and unrealistic perkiness. I just can't relate to it. If they aired a Mr. America, I might watch it. With male beauty pageants things seem to be a little more ironic and light-hearted. I also must admit that sometimes the guys are pretty cute.
