Military Moms Photographed Breastfeeding in Uniform: Inappropriate or Harmless?

There's something about breastfeeding that seems to get people all riled up. Why? We're not sure. Doctors recommend breastfeeding as the best way to feed your baby for at least the first year of his or her life. But still ... there's something about military moms doing it in uniform that takes the "issue" to the next level.

A photo of two military moms breastfeeding their babies -- part of a local breastfeeding awareness campaign by Mom2Mom of Fairchild Air Force Base -- is supposedly causing an "outrage." We're not really sure who's outraged, but this is the photo in question:

moms

"People are comparing breastfeeding in uniform to urinating and defecating in uniform. They're comparing it to the woman who posed in Playboy in uniform [in 2007]" Crystal Scott, a military spouse and mother of three who launched the group, told Yahoo! Shine. "We never expected it to be like this."

Terran Echegoyen-McCabe, a member of the Air National Guard who was photographed in uniform nursing her 10-month-old twin daughters, defended the pics on the "Today" show. "I'm proud to be wearing a uniform while breastfeeding. I'm proud of the photo and I hope it encourages other women to know they can breastfeed whether they're active duty, guard or civilian," she said. Do you have a problem with the pic?

Does wearing a uniform disqualify you from motherhood and all that it encompasses...NO.

Youve got to be kidding. This is breast used for true purpose, and it's not like you can see nipples or anything... *rolls eyes*

You expect these women to defend your family and country but not take care of their own children? I really don't get why people have such an issue with breast feeding, it's what breasts are for. It's their only purpose.

And how is crapping your pants the same as breast feeding your child?

You are correct...in reality, that is the only reason those things are there. Now that I am older I wish at times I could take them off once in a while just to get them out of the way.

True, but I can honestly say from experience that in 25 years or so they will be walking on those boobs because of it. Gravity is a bitch.

Happens even if you don't BF. Still better for baby and worth it.

So is natural always best, when it comes to use of "birth control?"

I say that the "no method" method, is the best, and the most natural.

Hmm. I would have thought that "natural is best" might apply to more things as well? Not saying that you seemed to saying that, but logically speaking.

Not the current conversation. I am personally not for BC.

You are saying that you don't use any "birth control," or that you don't believe in people using any means of "birth control?"

Are you saying that BC is too much off-topic?

They are women and moms, and in the military...so what's inappropriate here? It's all part of their "job"

i find it inappropriate not because its in a military uniform, but just because I don't think breastfeeding is something that needs to be displayed.

    I know, I do!
I don't know why I'm bothered exactly... right now I don't think I'll even breastfeed my own children the traditional way... my opinion on breastfeeding may change when I'm a mother, but right now the thought of like sucking on boobs just makes me uncomfortable.

men have a hard time not thinking of them as a sexual object. They aren't. They are there for a reason, and it's not your reason.

.... can't convince a 'toddler' he/she isn't hungry ... and that they need to wait until they get home ... nothing 'disturbing' about it ... actually, it's 'natural'.

They should've fed them before they left then

One cannot 'force-feed' at that age ... when they get hungry they want to be nourished ... or, as you (should, at least) know, you'll have a cross and crying child on your hands, not only making the parent(s) miserable but everyone else within hearing distance as well.

Just because their in uniform doesn't mean that they're not mothers anymore, in or out of uniform they still have responsibilities as mothers and one of those happens to be breastfeeding their child.

If the photograph is in a breastfeeding pamphlet, or handed out by doctors to promote breastfeeding, then who cares. If it was placed on the front cover of a newspaper or forced upon the rest of us to view by being publicly displayed, then it is extremely inappropriate.

God gave women breast to feed their children. I see nothing wrong with this photo. I'm sorry but Pelople need to not take this picture up the ass. If it were a grown man then it would be disgusting. But it happens to be a child eating. There is nothing sexual about this picture. So there is nothing wrong with this picture... just a mother doing her motherly duties.

I for one thing Breast feeding in public is wrong. In the age of breast pumps and bottles why can not a breast feeding woman pump the milk out while her baby is sleeping at home, keep that milk cold till she goes out and use that milk in a bottle to feed her child. Pulling out her breast in public if she was not feeding her baby would be illegal so why is it ok when a baby is going to be attached to it.

Those who are all riled up with this probably think porn is ok. Those who think it should be done in private should do all moms a favor and pluck their eyes out. Apparently they don't realize they don't have to look. Oh look! A woman in uniform is breastfeeding! OMG!!! The world is not short of dimwits is it?
