Military Moms Photographed Breastfeeding in Uniform: Inappropriate or Harmless?

There's something about breastfeeding that seems to get people all riled up. Why? We're not sure. Doctors recommend breastfeeding as the best way to feed your baby for at least the first year of his or her life. But still ... there's something about military moms doing it in uniform that takes the "issue" to the next level.

A photo of two military moms breastfeeding their babies -- part of a local breastfeeding awareness campaign by Mom2Mom of Fairchild Air Force Base -- is supposedly causing an "outrage." We're not really sure who's outraged, but this is the photo in question:

"People are comparing breastfeeding in uniform to urinating and defecating in uniform. They're comparing it to the woman who posed in Playboy in uniform [in 2007]" Crystal Scott, a military spouse and mother of three who launched the group, told Yahoo! Shine. "We never expected it to be like this."

Terran Echegoyen-McCabe, a member of the Air National Guard who was photographed in uniform nursing her 10-month-old twin daughters, defended the pics on the "Today" show. "I'm proud to be wearing a uniform while breastfeeding. I'm proud of the photo and I hope it encourages other women to know they can breastfeed whether they're active duty, guard or civilian," she said. Do you have a problem with the pic?

I think the main reason some people find breast feeding offensive is the fact that it reminds us that breasts are a food source and not an object of male fantasy that is further facilitated by the legal system that says breasts cannot be seen unless they belong to a male. Men & women are sexual being, & body shame has turn people into sexual objects! Which in turn has perverted our likes & dislikes!!

How can you support a breast feeding mother being in the military..on active duty...What happens if she gets sent to Afghanistan should she breast feed there?..completely insane..what kind of society has nursing mothers on active duty??..

If a MilMom wants to breastfeed in uniform, what is the big deal?? There are BIGGER problems in this world that need addressing rather than a Mother nursing her child in or out of uniform.
People who have an issue with this, or breastfeeding in general, need to get over it, and learn/develop some tolerance about the fact that Life isn't going to be to their ideal.
These women are Soldiers, so unless you've signed up and put in a tour voluntarily, I don't think you have a proper entitlement to criticize.
A soldier's life is tough enough.

They already have reduced minimum phisical requirments to enter the military now they can be pregnat while still in the military.... this is almost as bad as the don't ask don't tell policy being removed.

This is just stupid. These women are doing what women have done since the dawn of time. Being in uniform has nothing to do with it. it's like saying women in uniform shouldn't go to the bathroom. Women should breast feed. It's what's best for the baby and it helps the mothers. Leave these women alone.
