Microsoft CEO Declares War on Apple: What Company Makes Better Products?

Microsoft and Apple have been duking it out since the start of technology. The companies are classic arch-enemies with a healthy dose of mutual respect. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates had a notorious "frenemy" relationship, with Gates' Microsoft actually providing a bailout financing (investment) to the tune of $150 million in 1997. It was an investment that saved Apple and was hugely profitable to Microsoft in the long run. But, with all that being said, a person is either PC or Apple. Which one are you?

MASHABLE.COM reports:
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer declared war on Apple and didn't rule out a Microsoft-made smartphone.

Microsoft and Apple both use the same hardware, but Apple charges 2-3 times the amount for the same parts. My PC cost me a little over $1,000 to build but an Apple with almost identical specs would cost $3,174.00 (from their website)

As for the OS, Apple is good if you don't understand computers and don't do more than surf the net. PC is good if you like being able to control your machine and get work done.

Vista sucked! Have to agree with you on that one, but I actually like Windows7 quite well, major improvement over Vista. I'm of the opinion that Vista was a total waste of time.

Never tried Windows 7 so I can't really tell, vista is so slow, my hard drive is spinning all the time (on an Intel Quad core 4GB Ram). The worse I think is when it goes to sleep, it takes it at least twice the time than a normal start. When I boot on linux it's almost instantaneous (maybe 10 sec) from power button pressed to the login window. I'll try to see if I can give windows 7 (or 8) a shot somewhere.

I don't like apple, they're over priced and over-hyped, I've tried apple products and I've found apple products are for people who don't know how to manage a PC...

I always tell people that it is like owning a car. Sure, you can drive a BMW or Mercedes, they are fine automobiles, but they are way overpriced and hyped in the U.S. Buy a Lexus , Acura, Infinity or heck, a Chevrolet, at least you can get them serviced for a more reasonable rate. In the case of the Japanese brands, other than routine maintenance, you'll see less of the repair shop. Not saying Apples break often, they don't and they have a wonderful product, but the nearest Apple store is nearly a 50 mile trek (one way) for me and there are good PC repair centers all over, if I were to need one. Yeah, and for the price... I can buy 2 Windows based units.

I would just rather build my own for a better price, much better customizing than paying over $2000 just to get what you get without being able to change anything.
I feel bad for Apple users because they're stuck with what they have and then to upgrade they have to shell out a ton more money for a whole new unit...It's insane.

Ah, a common fallacy. The reason Apple products don't get viruses is because less people use them. To a computer hacker, it makes more sense to design a virus to target a product more people use, thus to scam more people. Apple Products are NOT somehow "better designed" to handle viruses.

Never had apple. But I just got an apple iPad and yea it's pretty good. (I use my iPad for sodahead) but I had a HP Microsoft laptop for 4 years until SOMEBODY had to knock it over a table and it broke. OMG! I'll never forgive that person, but anyways, apple is okay too, but all my 14 years of being alive I've had microsoft.

I don't know anything about computers so my opinion is hardly credible but I find Apple products too confusing. I love the iPod Classic but it ends there. The computers aren't as user friendly and I've saved stuff on it and sent it to myself and then been unable to open it on a different computer because the formats are incompatible :s more trouble than its worth

Apple is hardly a competitor of Microsoft. What is he worried about? Apple products are great- smart, beautiful, green and simple though. However, Apple is not the industry standard and is not affordable for the average consumer.

In the smartphone arena Apple is competitive.

Maybe if their stuff was more impressive I wouldn't be so blah about them but there's no wow factor with Apple stuff and their OS just isn't that great, maybe if you need something really simple, can't handle a real computer and have a butt load of money to waste then I say go for it.
The fact that you are stuck with the same thing and can never really upgrade anything is what really turns me off.

"not affordable for the average consumer"

Only a fool would pay those prices. An extra 4 gig of RAM would cost $75 from Apple, its average price is $25. 2 TB HDD from Apple $300, average price about $130. An Optical Drive from Apple $100, average price $20. Mind you this is a the same hardware.

I strongly disagree, also I upgrade my ram from another source. The time I've saved using a mac has left me with more time to get actual work done. I still run virus scans, but I don't need a program running in the background 24/7 (what a pain). Often mac users buy a computer use it, and then sell it before the warranty ends- because apple computers tend to hold their value. Also, people who don't spend money on smartphones and expensive clothing can easily afford a mac.

Time you save running a Mac? Do you think windows user spend all day fighting problems? I haven't had a problem on this machine since I built it.

If your computer can't handle one program running in the background there is something wrong with your Mac. My tray currently tells me I have 14 programs running in the back ground, but then again I have 8 cores and plenty of RAM.

If you want to spend 3x the price for the same hardware, the more power to you. I'll take my money and buy a smart phone, expensive cloths, and a PC that will far out preform a Mac of similar pricing.

Add another $50 to $100 per year in an antivirus software on windows, a video and photo editing software. Most of the mac come with a IPS LED screen, which is quite expensive but very clear. I also was able to sell my 1year old imac I bought for $1600 for $1200, try to do the same with a PC.
  • Kirino deBrice 2012/07/18 18:39:00 (edited)

    My antivirus is free.

I can get video editing software for free to, but I have no need for it.

Oh wow, 1 LED. I have three.

People don't sell one year old PCs because we can do something macs can't, upgrade. So we don't need to spend $2,000 a year to stay up to date.

My PC only cost about $1,000 to build, a Mac with similar specs would cost $3,174. So tell yourself what ever you need to to justify spending 3x the price for the same hardware in a shiny box (my tower still looks better though).

Build me a macbook air for cheaper than and a macbook air. And you can effectively get software for free, which are badly built and come with spyware.

PS: LED and LED IPS aren't the same.

My mac was a Quad core i5 8Gigs of RAM and 27" IPS display. I highly doubt you could do better a year ago for $1600

You're missing the point on purpose. 18 months ago that was much more expensive (8core i7 was not even released). I'm willing to argue as long as you stay fair. 27" IPS LED is tiny? I don't think so. and you're still missing a good quality mouse, keyboard, AC unit and Microsoft License.
  • Kirino deBrice 2012/07/18 22:48:52

"(8core i7 was not even released)"

Yes it was. It was released in October of 2009.

    "27" IPS LED is tiny?"

Compared to my 3 40", yes.

"you're still missing a good quality mouse"

So are you in your prices. Apples mice and keyboards are far from good quallity. Decent, yes. Good, no.

    "AC unit"

What? I'm guessing you mean air condictioning? I've never put an AC unit in any computer I've built. They don't even make those. AC's make condensation, thats bad inside a computer.

    "Microsoft License"

    Mine was free.
