Love her or hate her, Michelle Obama is having an impact on what you eat.

The company that owns the Olive Garden, Red Lobster and four other restaurant chains is vowing to cut the calories and sodium in its meals and overhaul its kiddie menu thanks to the first lady's childhood obesity campaign, The Associated Press reports.

Darden Restaurants Inc. will reduce the calories and sodium in all its meals by 10 percent over five years, and by 20 percent over 10 years.

By next July, all kids' meals will come with a side of fruit or vegetables and eight ounces of 1 percent milk unless an adult requests a substitute, Drew Madsen, president and chief operating officer of Darden, told the AP.

Darden's four other restaurant chains are LongHorn Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, Bahama Breeze and Seasons 52. The Capital Grille and Seasons 52 do not have children's menus.

Needless to say, the first lady was thrilled.

"With this new commitment, Darden is doing what no restaurant company has done before," she said at the announcement on Thursday. "I believe the changes that Darden will make could impact the health and well-being of an entire generation of young people."

Do you applaud the first lady's efforts? Or do you want her to stay out of your favorite restaurants?

Cocaine kills! so does 7,000 or more miligrams of sodium a single meal., cocaine is illegal, so should a meal that can cause a Stroke or Heart Attack! Believing that killing people with food that has to much sodium is a good thing, is like saying a mass murderer is a blessing to the.Country. Resturants are allowed to.... They have speed limits, than they.should have sodium limits, sugar limits as well! People lets not let our pleasure senses lead us lets lead.our.plesure senses.

I see the usual first lady haters are here. 1/3 of our population is obese. Anyone who wants to suggest (not mandate) that trying to eat healthier and exercise is better should not be subject to getting trashed by right wing idiots. I applaud these restaurants for their interest.

    Healthy eating

I'm glad the Corporate restaurant chains are stepping up their game & seeing that offering healthier food choices is good for their business model & bottom line. Kudos to Mrs. Obama for INSPIRING (not mandating as some of these haters are insinuating) these chains to do.

BTW, I don't know if Art or Fef is behind this but it smacks of Conservative dog whistle politics:

"Do you applaud the first lady's efforts? Or do you want her to stay out of your favorite restaurants?"

MRS OBAMA DIDN'T MANDATE THIS SO DON'T EVEN TRY TO JUSTIFY "...do you want her to stay out of your favorite...?"

She is interfering where she has NO business being. What kind of IMPACT can phasing out or cutting down calories and sodium over 5 years or 10 years have. In both cases, it could be done over a 3 month period and be done. Cutting done on sodiumand letting the customer use salt to their own tastes IS GOOD.

"Nearly 100,000 (Detroit) schoolchildren will receive the free meals regardless of income,
(Read that again REGARDLESS OF INCOME!!)
thanks to a program administered by the federal Department of Agriculture.

“the effort is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Option Program, which will be piloted starting with the 2011-2012 school year.”

“One of the primary goals of this program is to eliminate the stigma that students feel when they get a free lunch, as opposed to paying cash,"

[The stigma??? Nowadays kids just swipe a lunch card. It's not like little Johnie is scrounging for pennies in the lunch line.]

The change will add another 600,000 students to the dole, the News reported.

All states will be part of the program by the 2014-15 school year. "

Why are we now paying for free lunches for kids of rich parents? Are they trying to blow as much money as possible?
The stated goal is to reduce the stigma, but we all know it is so they can control what the kiddies eat.

Something is very wrong when in the 1960's all high school and jr. high hot cooked lunches were 35 cents, including milk. People worked in school cafeterias cooking hot lunches which also provided jobs. In the 1970's my children went to an all white elementary school, which was not deliberately an all white neighborhood. There was no cafeteria or free lunches because the federal government refused to give money to any school district who did not have minority students.

That's great but let's tackle the real issue. What they put in our food before it hits the grocery store or restaurants. The additives we don't need; not enough fresh meats or veggies by the time it gets to some stores it is rotten. Then when u get sick because you ate what you wanted to eat and become obese or sick with all types of diseases, are you going to complain about health insurance and the high cost with little to no benefits? great job Michelle!

She's now being a first lady....using her title to tackle an epidemic most of us do not understand or refuse to acknowledge. Kids are fat. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it, but the reason isn't simply just video games or computer/TV time that's causing it. It's the crap in the manufactured and processed foods they eat that has just as much impact!

Many will argue for her to stay out of their lives, and I completely understand. However, I'd rather see our leaders try to take up causes affecting society on the home-front than sitting idly by or trying to protect certain special interest groups.

She's not making the laws, folks, she's just using her influence (too bad her husband has no clue how to use his proficiently or effectively) to try to make this a better place by keeping toxins out of our bodies. Bravo!

people aren't fat because of the government, and they wont lose weight because of the government either. Government SHOULD provide knowledge to the people. What they SHOULDN'T do is enforce laws based on their position of that knowledge.
