Not if she paid for it with her own money. As a FLOTUS, she represents the USA, she has to look good. The Democrats started by criticizing Sarah Palin, Ann Romney and if you remember, Nancy Reagan. I guess this is tit for tat time. All Michelle Obama has to do is to look elegant and the clothes would flatter her body type. As a FLOTUS she had been seen in many inappropriate clothings, i.e., shorts and tank tops, pants that are too tight it showed her panty lines and emphasized her big rear ends. Not that Laura Bush had been seen in these types of clothing, but imagine if she did, the press would never stop insulting her however, they hardly picked on Michelle on her clothing gaffs. Going back to this J. Mendel jacket, IMHO, it looks just OK on her, not terrific, flattering from the front but not good from behind, again too much emphasis on her big rear end. It would have been better if she wears a skirt without any pleats, as the one she wore looked cheap with the sloppy hemline, not a good match for a $6,800 jacket.

Michelle Obama work an expensive outfit when she was attending an event with other heads of state. This is like her wearing an expensive gown for a State Dinner. It's rediculous to compare this to that of what one wears on any given day. If you really pay attention to what she wears during her public outtings you will find that she repeats clothing and doesn't buy outragously expenive items the majority of the time.

Doubtful. Ann Romney was also wealthy prior to her husband's bid for Presidency. All of the political candidates, including their spouses, are quite wealthy people and can afford to pay high prices for their wardrobes. They're also judged for their appearance and criticized on both ends of the spectrum. Nancy Reagan came under a great deal of fire when she hired a designer to improve her image. Hillary Clinton was criticized for her wardrobe choices. All political figures and their spouses have, by their own choices, jumped onto microscope lenses to be judged for everything, and celebrities and sports figures suffer the same. I wonder if the question here is more about whether or not tax-payers dollars are what funds the first lady's wardrobe. For that I have no answer. Right now, as people I know scramble and scrimp to afford school clothes and supplies for their kids, I guess I just don't care what someone so far removed from where I am might wear.

I agree. Besides, in the photos, she is seen talking with Prince William and Princess Kate. What should she have worn? Of course she needed to be dressed in thousand dollar items... Prince William and Princess Kate both have extensive wardrobe budgets through Prince Charles. It's a matter of appropriateness. When she came to a few schools here in my state to speak to kids about health and fitness, she wore a sensible Armani suit that was well-tailored, along with very sensible loafers. Why do I know that? Because though her message was about using sports and fitness to help achieve greatness, the local media seemed more interested in her clothes.
