Michelle Obama Dons a $6,800 Jacket: Does it Offend You When the First Lady Wears Expensive Clothes?

Michelle Obama wore an exquisite J. Mendel cap sleeve jacket to the London Olympics reception -- and there's no denying it's gorgeous -- but there is some controversy over the price: $6,800. Check out the dud... and the critical reactions in the video below!

It almost seems like the First Lady can't win because she has also been criticized for wearing "cheap" clothing, but that seems to be the status quo for females in the political world. When you see the First Lady (any First Lady) wearing expensive clothes like this, does it seem like she's flaunting her wealth like some claim. Does it offend you? Or does it go with the territory of being married to the President of the United States?

EXAMINER.COM reports:
Move over, Ann Romney. It looks like you’ve been outspent in the wardrobe department by First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama.

Only because the left made such a huge deal over Ann Romney's clothes and even Sarah Palin's.

Did they? I was a baby and all I saw was the anger over watergate. I know my dad used to respect him...before.... Did that change most peoples minds or was it more of a "lewinski" where everyone was like ok, so what?

That is what I have talked about before. Though it wasn't fashion. People would accuse the Conservative politicians and supporters of being racist yet no one wants to point out that Obama has been racist.

Warning: Don't assume that I am calling Obama a socialist.

Hitler was Austrian Jew, Obama is half African half Caucasian. The point where the blur, is where Obama is actually racist against white people. Have you heard him single out African American children, like they are the only kids who can't afford a education. Just because there is a stereotype doesn't make it true.

I'm Native American, I am also Euro-Caucasian. Because of the way I look, I'd get occasional racist stare from some of the people who are obviously more Native American than I am. When I lived in that part. Though the worst racism I have experienced is with a majority of the people who are African american where I currently live, that don't go to anime club or church with me. I've met some awesome nice people no matter what the color or race. I just find it sad that people can be so stereotypical and racist, when at the same time more people complain about white people being racist. When white people ain't really the problem anymore.

Would have LOVED a 3rd choice here!!

MOST of the time it doesnt bother me. She should dress according to her station. When it does bother me is when doing so is almost insulting. IE- when she served food at the shelter in 540.00 dollar sneakers.

but why would it bother you that she had on 540 sneakers? its her stuff should she go roll around in the dumpster to pretend to be living on the streets just to make a statement? no, she should be herself

I think that is simply rubbing someones face into the fact that she has what they dont. When I go to work at our local shelter I dont dress in my very best with jewelry and hundred dollar shoes....(as if I have any, lol, but I wear something in which I dont stand out)
  • American Sheila 2012/07/31 22:18:23

I doubt very seriously if the people in shelters are looking at what clothes or shoes someone is wearing and how much they cost when they come to help them. Most of them probably would not know $540 sneakers from $5 sneakers, the same for clothes and they probably don't even care.
  • Sheila American 2012/08/01 15:20:35

LOL we did. there was one church that would make everyone all mad showing up in furs and jewels and the like. I was IN a shelter (the same one I now do volunteer work in) and yes you notice.
  • American Sheila 2012/08/02 21:00:45

There is quite a bit of difference between showing up in furs and jewels and showing up in tennis shoes, no matter how much they cost. Just say that you and that "one church" notice what people are wearing. I doubt very seriously if the people in the shelter care even if they do notice.

However, it seems to me, if they are in a shelter, they have more important issues to worry about than what the person who comes in good faith to try to help them is wearing. I would think it would be even more disconcerting if the person who has supposedly come to help them showed up looking as if they need help them self.

Pay attention I was IN THE SHELTER. I was one of the noticers, and there were plenty of comments made by the other people in the shelter. But whatever. I stand by ALL of my comments and that is all I have to say about that to quote a great movie.

PAY ATTENTION! I was in the supermarket, it does not mean that everyone else there was there shopping for the same items I was shopping for.

It is blatantly obvious that you were one of the "NOTICERS", if anyone else in the shelter really and truly did comment, I am sure it was because you, "NOTICER", initiated and instigated the comments.

My question to you is, if you were in a homeless shelter, how shallow are you to be worrying about the type of clothing the people who came to try to help you were wearing?

That is probably why you were in a homeless shelter in the first place and may someday have to return there for the same reasons whatever they were. People who don't learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them.

Did it not ever occur to you that if those were not people of at least modest means, they would not have been in a position to help homeless people like you? Yet all you can do instead of thanking them for their help is to complain about the attire they wore when they came to your aid. What an ungrateful, pathetic and sad excuse for a human being you must be. It's no wonder you were in a homeless shelter. :-(
  • Sheila American 2012/08/03 15:55:32 (edited)

Its no wonder I was in a shelter? I was in a shelter because I broke my back in a car wreck that was NOT my fault but the other driver had no insurance and mine was strictly liability and could not pay my bills. I appreciated all everyone did for me. Many there did not. Felt it was their due somehow.

But anyway; if you are going to assume things you should be familiar with the saying assume makes an ass of u and me. Too bad in this instance it did NOT reflect on me...lol...

I am done with you and your high andf mighty attitude. I do pray that IF something like that ever happens to you you are able to find the help I did and that you will NOT have to deal with people like YOU making assumptions. Good day.

and I am sure that since the homeless do not know what 540 dollar shoes look like, it doesnt matter to them. so why would it matter to you?
and even if they did know how much it cost, they dont care, they care about the service she is helping to provide.

Know what? Bite my ass hun. I answered a poll and YOU questioned ME about my opinion. I WAS HOMELESS. I lived in a shelter. Dont presume to think you know me or all that much about me.

Do I know how ALL of any group feels? No, and either do YOU. There is NO whole group that has the same opinion of much of anything.

It DOES concern me. If you dont feel the same why are you wasting your time and mine?

No, I'm not offended by anything worn by a First Lady. For one thing, she is the wife of a head of state and is required to be well-dressed. Secondly, her husband does get paid for the job he does and third, there is no way of knowing whether clothes the First Lady wears are purchased by her or loaned/given to her by a designer. This First Lady gets criticized for shopping in Target and for shopping designer wear. Nothing she does will please people.

Actually right-wingers like me wish Michelle Obama well...read my comment above.

M.O. can do whatever she wants with her own money.

I do however see constant liberal attacks at what the Romneys do with THEIR OWN MONEY including where they bank, how many homes Mitt owns and Ann Romney's horse riding.

This victim status stuff gets old. The Obama get so much better press than anybody on the right, it's hilarious when lefties cry foul.

I don't care what Ann Romney spends on her clothes either. If her husband doesn't mind footing the bills, she can buy anything she wants. The public (right or left) has no business commenting or being concerned with what a private citizen does with their money and the press has no business commenting on it either.

I agree but let me ask you this. Has Michelle Obama ever engaged in class warfare?

I am willing to give her the consideration she has denied others.

Now if she could offer me the same consideration, I would be obliged.

I'm going to be really honest with you Art - I don't pay attention to anything Michelle Obama or Ann Romney say. I'm not voting for either of them. If there was a viable third candidate, I would probably not be voting for one of their husbands. I've heard enough crap about the race card and class warfare and clothes spending and birth certificates and all the other stuff that's out there. I want to hear HOW either of the candidates are going to do what they're promising to do. Talk is cheap - don't tell me you're going to create jobs. Tell me HOW you're going to do this. That is what will get this economy moving and so far, both campaigns and the economy need a laxative.

I am not crazy about their husbands as a right winger they are both far to the left of me but there is an important issue...that of envy.

If we are going to hate people for having wealth and make it government policy, then we will have more poverty.

Michelle's husband is a strong believer in class envy as evidenced by his politics and statements.

I have no beef with the Obama's being 1-percenters but they sure seem to want to attack other people with money.

(BTW: you don't have to write 'honest'. I assume you are being honest.) :)

I do not want to see everyone on the same income level. I do not want to see the kind of country where everyone gets the same thing no matter how hard they work. I want to go back to whatever time in our history we were on top of the heap with virtually full employment, with people taking pride in their work, with competition among companies and workers to do better and provide more services. I want American companies to bring jobs back to America and be prideful in having their name associated with this country. I want to have a choice in the merchandise available to me rather than having almost everything I buy made in China or some other foreign company. I don't envy anyone who has worked hard and made something of himself - more power to him. If I want to earn more, I have to work harder - I'm not looking for a handout. That is how this country was born and remained for a long time. But the middle class, which has traditionally been the backbone of America, is shrinking and there is a greater distance between the wealthiest and the poorest and that is not good for us.
