I don't know about cute - Chivalrous, Gentlemanly, A nice thing to do.

I'm 23, almost 24 years old. I was brought up to be kind and helpful for people - male or female, young or old - including holding doors. The car door doesn't happen often because they usually get to the door before I do.

The problem is that you don't know what's going to happen. I'll use opening regular doors as an example.

Men - generally say "thank you" and walk in. Never had one complain.

Women - Never know. Sometimes they accept the gesture as what it is - being nice - say "thank you" and walk in. Other times they get offended and start in on the "I can open my own door!" type of thing.

Feminists turned an issue of kindness and chivalry into equality. I still hold the door, and I've had older women say things like "Who says chivalry isn't dead?" when I do. I've also nearly had my head taken off by a banshee woman who thought I was making a statement on gender roles. I considered letting the door slam in her face, but I chose to continue holding it.

Holding the door - for ANYONE - is a nice thing to do. Period.

I really think that it's a nice thing to do. If I was on a date, or had a girlfriend, I'd do it.

Whether a man should open a car door for a woman or not. Or did you mean something specific?

If it's for a date or something it's charming

If it's just two friends walking around and the guy insists on opening the door it's a little awkward. Excuse me, but I think I can open the door myself! XD

I would say the chivary thing if at all, extends mostly to signifigant others. Yeah it could be a little akward otherwise. Maybe thats to the death of such a gester as well. I will say though its akward if I dont open other doors for a woman or hold a door.

I have this guy friend who jumps into front of us when we get to the door so that he can open in for us....it's a little awkward XD

Thats probably because you are only 17, but somewhere that guy was taught it was the proper thing to do. He is right and you should thank him when he does. Also if im approaching a door at the same time as someone else I try and make the effort to open the door and hold it for them first. This way it prevents the akward molment of who is to go through first.

I also say "Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am, Yes Sir, No Sir," but of course, this too is taken by some to be offensive! Especially women! They're always like "I am offended by ma'am, it makes me feel old!" I always have to take time to inform them it's how I was raised and that it is a sign of respect for the gender and is chivalrous as well.
  • Carlo James 2012/08/30 03:01:51
    Carlo
Yeah but that may be subjective as well, because when someone is young the reference to a sir or maam may make them feel old. It has me.

That too is confusing. Am I not supposed to show my elders respect since I'm young? Perhaps my elders need to relax and just accept that I am respectful of them! It's better than saying "yup, nope, screw off..." like so many of my generation do.

Both cute and cheesy. It's nice and all, but women really should be able to open a car door for themselves aha.

The right thing to do. Several years ago my wife dropped off a contract I needed. I didn't know it at the time but several of my co-workers watched as I walked her to the car. Two had a bet on whether I would open the door for her or not. Needless to say I opened the door much to one of our secretary's dismay.

    Edited for spelling

Tommy why do you put the reason for editing your statement. Is that to say you would "never" change something you wrote or add to it, but only for spelling errors?
It just seems funny to me is all.

Other than for spelling I don't edit a comment that has been replied to or that has been raved. I don't feel that it is fair to the other party. Does that answer your question?
  • Carlo TommyB 2012/09/02 00:29:53 (edited)

Sure, but I would assume all edits would be immediate for the most part

Or the reason for editing this I will add, What if you forgot a word?

I love it when men hold open doors...it shows how mucha gentleman they are. But I do know women who hate this Ex. My grampa and I walking to the store. He open the door for a women in her twenties. She looks shocked and offended "I can open my own door!" And she continues to refuse to go through. My grampa...looks confused...the same look im wearing. I'm guessing she was a feminist or something...but my gramps was just trying to be polite...not trying "assert his manhood" I hold doors for people all the time...man or woman. I try to be polite...sorry if that bothers some people.

"Cheesey" voter are either single men or jaded women. My husband still opens the door for me nearly every time we get in the car and it is a gesture of LOVE.
