McDonald's to Sponsor London Olympics: Good Business or Bad Message?

Less than three months to the London Olympics! We can't wait to see the tight, toned competitors showing off their unbelievable athletic skill. And somehow, this message of health and fitness is sponsored by ... McDonald's? Yup! The fast-food chain is a major sponsor for the London Olympics, to the dismay of a British doctors' group, The Associated Press reports.

McDonald's will be the only restaurant allowed to sell brand-name food at the games and there will also be a separate McDonald's within the athletes' village -- in addition to three others at the Olympic Park (one of which will be McDonald's largest franchise in the world), the AP reports.

To make matters worse, Coca-Cola has the exclusive right to sell non-alcoholic drinks at Olympic venues, and Heineken has been named the games' official beer. "It's very sad that an event that celebrates the very best of athletic achievements should be sponsored by companies contributing to the obesity problem and unhealthy habits," said Terence Stephenson, a spokesman for the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges, according to the AP.

McDonald's isn't new to the Olympics -- the company has been an official Olympics sponsor since 1976. The chain says it plans to bring "high-quality British food" at the Games, yet Big Macs, fries and milkshakes will be served. With about one-quarter of Brits currently obese, do you think McDonald's makes an appropriate sponsor for the London Olympics?

I think it's a poor irony, but they have the money to make the sponsorship. McDonalds is certainly not contributing to healthy lifestyle.

How is this good business? I just makes people think that eating McDonald's is ok and healthy which it most certainly is NOT! It would make more sense for an organic business so sponsor the Olympics...

Seriously?? Do you REALLY believe that any normal human being is going to "think that eating McDonald's is ok and healthy"? I've never met anyone in my 35 years on Earth who believes that McDonald's food is healthy.

I ate a big mac and shake the other day. I spent another hour working out.. It is people sedentary lifestyle making them fat not McDonalds.

I didn't say anything about anyone being fat. I didn't say McDonald's makes you fat. I said the food there is not healthy. If you think it is healthy then you're a moron. It doesn't matter how much you work out. Eating food loaded with fat, cholestrol, salt, sugar, calories, etc is not a healthy choice. Ever seen a person who eats whatever they want and never gain weight? They could eat McDonald's all day long and never be fat but they would certainly have some health issues.

I guess I am a moron. Before we continue... lets talk about healthy? Is the salad healthy? Is the ranch grilled snack wrap healthy... Come on lets not talk moron status.. You may win biggest moron.

Now with that being said. Your are right.. after I re-read you didn't say anything about being fat. My apologies.

It all depends on what you order. You can make a grilled chicken at home... healthy or throw a bunch of salt and other crap on it.

First let me say....LMAO....your comment about "let's not talk moron status" was hilarious! I enjoy a good laugh, even if the joke's on me..so kudos! And I may be inclined to give you the grilled chicken wrap. McDonald's salads are typically worse for you then their regular hamburger. I just don't trust their food to be healthy. They have never really been the pillar of healthy food and I believe that it would make more sense to go elsewhere....even for a grilled chicken wrap. The author I was originally responding to tried to claim that a Big Mac and a Milkshake were healthy as long as you worked out afterwards...that is simply not the case. In general their food is never a healthy choice...I'm not saying you can't splurge from time to time and enjoy a "junk food" just don't call it healthy.

Yeah I enjoy a good laugh even when it on me as well. If you can't take it you shouldn't dish it out. Trust me I am the butt of many jokes. It has never bothered me.

I'll agree it isn't healthy. Things may be less artery clogging then other items. A big Mac and a milk shake isn't healthy. That is just one meal of the day. I could graze all day long on fruits and veggies though and take supplements at the beginning of the day.

The only pure health food you can get is at home. There you know what is going into it.

McDonald's is gross and fattening. It's a big reason why people are obese and getting diabetes.
    Ever seen Super Size Me?

They used to be, but they're not anymore. I keep up with the news. Maybe you're more like my sister and mom. I've seen Super Size Me many times and I could never eat all that. That was just a demonstration though.
