McDonald's to Sponsor London Olympics: Good Business or Bad Message?

Less than three months to the London Olympics! We can't wait to see the tight, toned competitors showing off their unbelievable athletic skill. And somehow, this message of health and fitness is sponsored by ... McDonald's? Yup! The fast-food chain is a major sponsor for the London Olympics, to the dismay of a British doctors' group, The Associated Press reports.

mcdonald s olympics

McDonald's will be the only restaurant allowed to sell brand-name food at the games and there will also be a separate McDonald's within the athletes' village -- in addition to three others at the Olympic Park (one of which will be McDonald's largest franchise in the world), the AP reports.

To make matters worse, Coca-Cola has the exclusive right to sell non-alcoholic drinks at Olympic venues, and Heineken has been named the games' official beer. "It's very sad that an event that celebrates the very best of athletic achievements should be sponsored by companies contributing to the obesity problem and unhealthy habits," said Terence Stephenson, a spokesman for the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges, according to the AP.

McDonald's isn't new to the Olympics -- the company has been an official Olympics sponsor since 1976. The chain says it plans to bring "high-quality British food" at the Games, yet Big Macs, fries and milkshakes will be served. With about one-quarter of Brits currently obese, do you think McDonald's makes an appropriate sponsor for the London Olympics?

Why is it that everyone rags on McDonalds and not the dozen of other fast food restaurants?

Maybe cuz McDonald's is more visible thru its advertising than all the other fast "food" (I use THAT term grudgingly) companies!

So what, they're all selling the same crap. Are Burger Kings' fries any better for you?

Well, that's because people want it obviously. No one is forcing anyone to eat at McDonalds.

It's all about moderation, despite the crap they put in their products...like pink slime. Go for the McGold.

How isn't it the same? Junk food sponsoring a sporting event. A drug sponsoring a recovery programme.

Not clever at all. And since when does AA have companies sponsoring them? You can eat fast food in moderation - an alcoholic can not drink in moderation.

I didn't say AA had companies sponsoring them...the message is the same...junk food sponsoring an event such as the Olympics sends the same message as a liquor company giving money to AA. There's plenty of appropriate companies that can sponsor the Olympics- in my opinion, fast food is not one of them.

The Olympics need sponsors - McDonalds has the money so why not to take it. What's the big deal - you act like McDonalds sells crack, not Big Macs.

No one's forcing anyone to eat McDs food or to drink Coca-Cola or Heineken. It's all about moderation. McDonald's has changed and added some healthier options in recent years.

If they want to be consistent, they'd have to ban all three from advertising anywhere. THAT is not possible.

I'm sure the Olympics needed the financial support of a big player like McDonald's so I wouldn't question it. And besides, even if the food isn't the healthiest, everything comes down to moderation. Eat it but don't overeat.

I don't eat mcdonalds, because I lived behind one for about 15 years, but every now and again, I'll get the French fry... The way to get them piping hot... Order them without salt... They must clean out the bin they put them in... Its the one thing I like... And I don't do it often... I can't even remember the last time I went... But mcdonalds is not holding a gun to my head, making me eat it... It's a choice all people are free to make... BUT all actions have consequence...

I don't think this would be the first time, would it? And it's already been said, but I'll say it again: McDonald's isn't responsible for making people fat; their customers are responsible for making themselves fat.

Also, alcohol is only unhealthy if you drink too much of it. It's fine in moderation.

If you choose to eat there every day don't blame Mc D for making you a lard ass. Get off the couch and watch your portions!
