McDonalds is Overly Blamed for Obesity: Agree?

People make free choices. Parents can choose to buy their kids a healthy salad or a double-mc-whopper-bacon-cheeseburger-royale. McDonalds offers a variety of inexpensive foods to people who don't have a lot of time or money. And, McDonalds has competition. The fat-police do-gooders can open their own fast food chain to compete with McDonalds with the energy they spend lobbying government to outlaw our pursuit of Happy Meals.9GAG is the easiest way to have fun!

Crap, I meant 'agree'. It is ridiculous how people blame fast food restaurants for their weight gain, when the customer is really held accountable for eating the food there in the first place.

McDonald's and other fast food chains are just doing their jobs. The customer is responsible for what they put inside their bodies.

Fet i wish you put in a Third choice option

Mc donalds makes unhealthy food with addictive Chemicals to get you addicted to thier food only recently do they offer healthy choice options like fruit slices and Salads
but when burgers are 99 Cents and a Salad is $4,99
when you have Screaming kids who are hungry you go for the cheaper cost food

People should be smart enough to make better food choices for themselves
so both Mc donalds and all fast food places and people are to blame

I myself have not ate at Mc donalds or any fast food place in over 5 years
I make the choice to make healthy Food choices

There was a guy that did a documentary about McDonalds and he ate all his meals there for a month and he gained weight. But your not suppose to eat at places like that everyday. If McDonalds wasn't any good they wouldn't have made a Billion Hamburgers!

Though I hate the idea of solely blaming McDonalds, there is so much advertising for junk food that makes junk food look like the best decision you can ever make. When's the last time you saw an apple getting so much love in a commercial. Healthy commercials usually involve a yoga teacher in an all white house, eating granola. Not that appealing to kids...or many adults...

You can choose to go and buy greens and eat a salad just as much as you can choose to eat a hamburger and fries. Personal choice is a cornerstone of democracy, just for the fact someone offers something unhealthy does not mean you are required to eat it.

McDonald's provides the matter, but it's the people who purchase the product who are to blame...they should decide on healthier choices. You can't blame the weapon or the manufacturer that kills. You blame the shooter or person who uses them.

Yes, they are overly blamed. We are the ones in charge of our plates here, and our childrens plates. My daughter didn't eat a single bite of any kind of fast food or pop until she was almost 4. I had people telling me how strict I was and that I did't ever let my kid have any fun. But when I was 6 months pregnant with her I was grocery shopping and watched a woman chew up a bite of sausage mcmuffin, pull it out of her mouth and feed it to her less than 3 month old baby! My kid hates most fast food (don't get me wrong, she is 6 now and loves a cheeseburger) but what do you think that other baby eats on a regular basis?

Many fast food restaurants has healthy choices as well. They have salads, fruits and healthy yogurts. Why only blame McDonalds, there are other fast food restaurants that mostly have unhealthy choices on their menu. You have a choice to what you want to eat, that is why you have menus. You can either buy your children greasy unhealthy burger, with salty fries, and a large soda with no fruits and just let him/her watch T.V, go to bed, or play on the computer all day or you buy them an healthy meal with fruits and encourage your kids to go outside and play so that they get their day worth of exercise. Technically, it's not McDonalds fault, stop trying to push the obesity issue on McDonalds. You have a choice.

Part of me agrees, at the end of the day it is the PARENTS choice to take them to mcdonalds to feed them rather than cooking a healthy home cooked meal. I can say that their food is very bad, I worked there for a year and gained 40 pounds.

When you shovel more food in your mouth and lay on the couch you're gonna get fat.
You can blame Mickey D's or any other place when they walk out grab you and shove the food in your mouth and make you swallow it. Untill then it's not their fault.

McDonalds is just selling what people are buying. The problem is that most of their food is utterly unhealthy, but is cheap and slathered with things our bodies crave (fat, salt, sugar).

Our species developed in an environment where each of these were much, much more rare. When you put them on every street corner (virtually), it becomes a problem. Ignorant humans are not able to stop, and say "Wait... my body craves these things as if I lived in an environment where they were rare. But, now that I can get these things ANY where at ANY time, I am going to have to fight my evolutionary biology in order to control those cravings."

Extraordinarily hard to do, and places like McDonalds have made billions on this very new human conundrum.

I would prefer education over legislation as well, but at what point, when we see it harming us as a nation, are legislators supposed to step in? When we are all obese and dying of diabetes, will we be wondering what went wrong?

McD's has been around for going on 60 years.

The obesity epidemic in America, meanwhile, is a relatively recent phenomenon.

There's a lot more contributing to the obesity epidemic than just McDonald's.

Your last line is agreeable. No doubt.

However, 60 years ago McDonald's had one restaurant. Today they have over 31,000. They've been growing right along with our waistbands. ;-)

But they've been a well-established chain for at least 45 or 50 years.

And during most of that time, there was no obesity epidemic.

However, this isn't just about McDonalds. I agreed with the questions, they are getting too much of the attention simply because they are the biggest.

This about every other fast food franchise, the food we find at the grocery stores, the sedentary lives we now live, etc, etc, etc...

It's people's choice to eat there.

Everyone knows eating too much of mcdonalds does make people fat cause it's mostly stuff with lots of calories, lots of salt and no nutritional value. But you can eat stuff at home that is equally as unhealthy for you or worse. It's people's own fault that they make unhealthy eating choices, and not mcdonald's fault. They don't tell you that you can only eat their stuff.
