Matthew's First Day at School

Marlow ~ Let There Be Light 2012/07/11 03:04:15
I know I owe an update on Matthew. It’s been a while and some have been asking and a bit has happened since then, mostly Matthew progressing into his terrible twos. This blog will not bring you up to date. I’ll have to save that for another time. But it documents an important day, Matthew’s first day at school.

A two year old in school? Well, this is pre-pre-school. LOL. Yeah they have such a thing. Apparently it’s common now. My wife had started looking for one she liked a few months ago, and she checked several and settled on this one a few weeks ago. Actually I remember the email exchange we had. It went something like this.

She: I visited Kiddy Academy today. I liked it best. I signed him up for two half days a week.
Me: Oh great. When does he start?
She: July 10th.
Me: So soon. I thought he was going to start in September when he turns three?
She: Well I pushed it up.
Me: Why?
She: I think he needs it.

Reading between the lines, I couldn’t help feel that it’s not Matthew that needs it but her, but that’s another story. ;)

So today was the day. I happened to take the morning off, and I got him up. As it happened he slept late today, beyond his normal waking time.

“Wake up, wake up sleepy head, you have a busy day today.” And so I got him changed, teeth brushed, washed up, hair combed, and dressed. Not sure he really understood what it all meant. We packed his knapsack and took some pictures in front of the house.

washed hair combed dressed understood meant packed knapsack pictures house

My wife dropped him off. He was shy at first but within fifteen minutes he opened up. That’s typical for him. Once he started playing my wife left and he was fine the rest of the morning. It was even a struggle to get him away when it was time to leave.

He even gets a daily report to take home. Today’s report was the following, ghost written from his voice:

What we did today:
I played in the yard with my friends!! We continued exploring the theme light as a feather. We played at the sensory table using different bird items. We colored birds and decorated them with different color feathers. We reviewed the alphabet and numbers 1-10. We practiced our color of the month, yellow, and shape of the month, diamond. We sang our songs at circle time. We read a book called “Feathers for Lunch.”

How I felt today:
Happy to be at school!!

My friend of the day:
Chiara.

LOL, I never had a friend for the day, and certainly not one called Chiara.
You!

OMG--MATTHEW HAS GOTTEN SO BIG--AND JUST ADORABLE TOO!!! AND A LITTLE LADY'S MAN TOO!
YOUR WIFE DID THE RIGHT THING--CHILDREN NEED TO BE WITH THEIR OWN PEERS
TO HAVE FUN AND EXPLORE! I REMEMBER WHEN MY 2 SONS WENT TO THEIR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. THEY WAVED AND SAID, HAVE A NICE DAY MOM. OTHER CHILDREN WERE CRYING, BUT NOT MINE. I KNOW YOU'LL THINK I WAS A CRAZY MOM, BUT I CALLED THEIR PEDIATRICIAN AND WANTED TO KNOW WHY THEY WEREN'T CRYING FOR ME. HE REASSURED ME THAT THEY WERE JUST WELL ADJUSTED. IT'S A SHOCKER NOT HAVING THEM WITH YOU, BUT IT IS FOR THEIR BENEFIT! AND AS I SEE FROM YOUR REPORT, MATTHEW IS WELL ADJUSTED.
    ENJOY MATTHEW EVERYDAY!
THANKS FOR SHARING THIS GREAT UPDATE ON MATTHEW!

I'm falling behind on your blogs about Matthew! You know, one day you'll be able to reflect on these blogs when Matthew is much older and remember all of these great memories! I think it's a good idea to be doing this, especially since so many others have interest in Matthew's progression. :)

That kid is going to be so good-looking as a young man, that he may need a bodyguard to protect him from the ladies. He's wonderful. Loving parenting shows in all his photos in a big way. Keep up the good work.

Make me! stomp :). Seriously, I wish you could. Some really serious things happened in the past 2 months and my doctor is utterly astounded that I am still alive, though not doing much kicking. Frankly, I am a bit astounded as well. Your blogs and kind words cheer me up, and that is a form of healing, so thank you.

I wonder about that too. I started learning to read at age 3. As an adult, I became a respected technical writer in Silicon Valley--is that because I got an early start, or is it a natural talent?

Always a combination of both I'd say. Environment and genetics both often play a part. That's what I've always believed, anyway. That's great that you've done so well. I'm a tech writer myself, though I do some other things too.

what kind of manuals do you write? I am disabled now. I was proud of my career. And I think you are right because 3 of 4 members of my family became professionals to varying degrees--I wrote, one edited, one proofread. I also ghost wrote a book, but an uneducated idiot unedited the whole thing. Thank goodness I wasn't given proper credit for my work on that one because the end result was no longer mine.

I mostly do tutorial documents now for online stuff since a lot of people have difficulty understanding how to use certain programs, social networking sites, etc., but I've written some technical manuals in the past for science/medical products. I love the field; there's always something new to learn. I'm sorry that you aren't able to do as much with your career as you'd like now; I'm sure you are/were quite good at what you do. Well, I'm glad things worked out! There's nothing worse than having someone who doesn't know what they're doing destroy what you've written. I actually spend most of my time now doing contract editing, because I've found that I really have a passion for it, and there's a high demand for good editors right now. Do you still do fiction writing for fun? I try to in my free time.

This is so cute. I went to nursery school which was a private school next to my siblings school and mom worked at the nursing home right on campus. I remember the glitter candles and nap times and especially after school when someone was selling fruits and vegetables on campus and I loved the tiny little pear tomatoes.

I'm sure school is fun for him and gives your wife a break too.

    Love hearing the updates!

Oh Marlow if he isn't adorable. I love the backpack....he looks so proud to be a "big" boy. As a former kindergarten teacher I love the activities they did on that first day. They tied everything together as a theme. How wonderful.
