28-year-old Dave Mullins and 31-year-old Charlie Craig stopped by Lakewood's Masterpiece Cakeshop to order their wedding reception cake -- what they hoped would be a rainbow-layered masterpiece decked out in teal and red frosting (their ceremony colors). Although they'll be reciting their vows in Provincetown, Massachusetts, in September, the couple plans to celebrate with a reception for friends and family in Denver in October. But after bakery owner Jack Phillips listened to their request, they say, he refused it. His business doesn't create cakes for gay weddings.

Actually it is just stupid. The cake shop is suppose to be providing cakes and other sweets and not pass moral judgement on others. I am sure they can find another bakery which will make a cake with love, not hate.

They have the right to refuse anyone they want, it's their business. It might be a dumb business decision and I wouldn't do it but it is their choice to run it how they want

That they CAN turn down business is their right.....BUT, turning down the money from a wedding cake is foolish if you are in business to make money. I know how much we spent on ours, and I don't know too many businesses that willingly turn down a thousand dollars, or more.

They're in the cake making business, not in politics, or religion, they should just stick to what they know. Besides, I'm sure all the press they're getting will create a negative impact on their business, hopefully.

They have the right to refuse a customer, but if it is because of their sexual orientation. THAT IS JUST WRONG! I would never patronize a place that would not serve customers because they are gay! IT'S STILL JUST WRONG!

I actually see both sides of this....i am wondering if it's the general policy.....hmmmmm so much like the word POLICE......to dictate what kind of event their cakes can be part of. Everybody's money spends the same. Can you imagine if all businesses screened their customers by religion, race, nationality or who we love?!...... playing devil's advocate.... i see signs in restaurants all the time saying they reserve the right to refuse service. I would certainly rather live in a society that is not vicious and prejudiced , but tolerant of other peoples differences, and their choices that have no bearing on others .

I think this is against civil rights laws but also it's just dumb. Why would you say no to business? Now they're just going to support your competitors.

It's my experience that as a group, gay folk are very creative so just think of all the
wonderful ideas this bakery will miss. I'm sure Dave and Charlie are used to the ignorance of some people so I would urge them to go to another bakery owner who will be happy to accommodate them. Best wishes for a long and happy marriage!

Why don't the couple just go and give their money to a shop that will accept it? Because hell, that's exactly what they did in the end anyways.

Actually it's like that here too I'm half white and I get descriminated all the time, but guess what tho, no one raises the issue. it's not a perfect world and people will always descriminate in some way, they always have found ways of getting around laws. I descriminate sometimes as much as they have towards me.

Gee, I really hope I can own business some day that is successful enough that I can turn down honest, paying customers. It's a cake shop for godsakes. Nobody is asking the owners to attend the wedding. Just bake the cake and shut up.

We don't make Jew's cook pork. Every one should be allowed to stick to their religious beliefs.
