Mary-Kate Olsen Smokes in Front of Boyfriend’s Daughter: Bad Role Model, or No Big Deal?

Bad girl, Mary-Kate! The Olsen twin, 26, was spotted strolling in New York with her 42-year-old boyfriend Olivier Sarkozy (half-brother of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy) and his tweenage-looking daughter. All the while, Mary-Kate Olsen was puffing away on a cigarette, The Daily Mail reports.

The actress-turned-fashion mogul and the investment banker appear to be going strong, but we wonder what this little girl’s momma has to say about the secondhand smoke, even if they are French. Mary-Kate, don’t you know that smoking ages your skin? And oh yeah, it can kill you.

Come now; there were many ways you could have said that which would have been just as pointed, but much less rude. Why not give them a try?

I'm fairly certain she's not a role model. If she is, her role model's smoking is the least of the girl's problems,

Anyone that smokes is a bad role model..., for not smoking that is. It doesn't mean that they do not embody many other traits that are quite admirable.

A lot of people may smoke, but that doesn't make it a good thing. Sure, there are worse things than smoking, but smoking still isn't a habit that I would want my child to pick up. The potential health complications are ridiculously terrible for you and you spend loads of money on cigarettes that could be spent differently.

I'm a smoker & don't smoke around my friends kid much, just to respect that he does not like me smoking & he's a good kid. What weirds me out is she is smaller looking than his wee daughter. It just looks odd, does he rest his ashtray on her head I wonder?

Mary-Kate Olsen is a bad role model - period. The cancer stick habit is just another layer to it.

What disturbs me is that the man immediately made me think of an aged "Danny Tanner" from Full House.

What's with demonizing smokers? Just because I can't personally afford it doesn't make it a bad habit.

No, but cigarettes are nicknamed "cancer sticks" for a reason.

It is a bad habit for your health - and that is documented fact.

There are as many studies which say it has no effect. It all depends on who benefits financially from the results of said studies.

Seriously? You actually believe that cigarettes can be completely harmless.

I haven't the time to copy and paste here. Just look up the chemicals in those things, as well as what they can do.

At least many people who do smoke know they are hurting themselves and have at least a semi-awareness that they can also hurt those around them.
  • TKramar Kigan 2012/06/24 06:15:06

Yes, they didn't even give me a cough. They had no impact on me physically before I quit, and my general health has only declined since I quit. I've actually been sick a few times since quitting, which never happened before.
  • Kigan TKramar 2012/06/24 12:23:55
    Kigan
Well you must have some Superman lungs, since anything with smoke inhalation has a tendency to cause coughing.

And I'm pretty sure everyone that quits goes through some illness - typically called withdrawal, nicotene fits, etc. Though they have ways to ease that now.
  • TKramar Kigan 2012/06/24 13:26:49
    TKramar
No, it wasn't withdrawal. I never found myself *wanting* a cigarette really. I generally only smoked out of boredom at the time I quit anyhow. They'd kick us out of the building twice a night, and I had nothing to do but sit and smoke. I would have much preferred to continue working. At home, though, I never even lit up. Just at work.

Cigarettes don't actually CAUSE cancer because if it did, every single person who had smoked them for long periods of time would get it, which is not the case.
  • Kigan alex 2012/06/23 17:50:11 (edited)
    Kigan
    Actually, yes they can.

Just because everyone who smokes doesn't get sick doesn't mean they can't cause it.

Here's a simple comparison: Allergies. Some people get them, some don't. Just because one person doesn't react to poison ivy doesn't mean no one will, and vice versa.

Same for Smoking and all the various harmful possible (key word there) side effects.

Lots of people smoke in front of their kids, they shouldnt do that for health reasons but it doesn't make the parent or in this case daddy's girlfriend a bad role model.
