Marc Jacobs Uses 14-Year-Old Models: OK or No Way?

When it comes to the catwalk, how young is too young? Marc Jacobs is under fire for sending two 14- or 15-year-old models down the runway at New York Fashion Week, The New York Times reports. But Marc Jacobs defended his use of the teens, Thairine Garcia and Ondria Hardin (pictured), in his show on Monday.

model

"I do the show the way I think it should be, and not the way somebody tells me it should be," Jacobs told the Times. "If their parents are willing to let them do a show, I don’t see any reason that it should be me who tells them that they can’t. There is no controversy," he said.

But, in fact, there is a little bit of a controversy. The Council of Fashion Designers of America asked designers not to use models under the age of 16 on their runways during Fashion Week, the Times reports. Most designers complied ... but not Jacobs.

That said, the "rule" is kind of optional. "The guidelines are suggested recommendations. They are not mandatory requirements. Each season we hope designers will follow them but it is really up to the designers to decide," CFDA President Steven Kolb told the Times. Do you think 14- and 15-year-olds are too young to walk the runway? Or is this a big deal over nothing?

As long as he keeps them dressed! That girl is showing less skin than 14 year olds walking the everyday streets.
Please Marc Jacobs, continue dressing these girls.

Ok. Models don't have to be over 18... and the parents are aware and consenting.

But, I really do hope that he takes their age into consideration when looking for someone to model risque/revealing clothes, and takes their age into consideration if he needs to criticize their modeling.

I don't see anything wrong with it, better than the 60 pound models you usually see on the catwalk I suppose.

Better to see 14 y.o. that dying from malnutrition? That raised in psychology of dieting to death?

PS Two sisters, both models, both die of "malnutrition"

That girl doesn't look like she is dying of malnutrition to me. Good for Marc Jacobs for not starving his models. And there is a limit of how light models under 16 can be now.

There is age limit also by CFDA & he broke it.
Not starving? He has 90 pound models.
His adds were banned for sexualising children.

    Example:

cfda broke starving 80 pound models adds banned sexualising children

I totally agree with you that Marc Jacobs's model choices have been very bad in the past. I was just saying that I don't think that it is TOO bad this time around that he used a perfectly healthy girl and dressed her appropriately. (sorry if this sends twice, my laptop is screwed up)

Parental consent is key. More profoundly, runway is one thing. Shoots involving the loss of clothing and dramatic facial expressions are another thing. But I'm not this girl's mother. Just saying.

It all depends... I mean as long as they're not underwear models or in seductive Guess photos... also it should be more of a part time thing for these 14 year old girls. There's nothing wrong with aspiring to be a model and doing modelling as a teen, but as long as it's not like high school drop outs are doing this.

The "No Way" is mostly for the outfit (though I must keep in mind that everyone's aesthetic to fashion is different) however I do worry about the girl's exposure to the demands and pressures of keeping up in the fashion world.

I agree that it's a rough business, but so is music, acting, all that stuff. So why aren't people making a big deal out of the others? As long as they want to, it is legal, they are getting paid and they aren't subjected to skimpy outfits, I see nothing wrong with it. They may be young, but this may be their dream. And whose to keep them from their dream just because of a little controversy? I'm sure she's still in school and has a normal teen life. Models that are older have lifes, so I'm sure these girls do too. I just hope that the parents aren't being stage parents like in those creepy Toddlers in Tiaras episodes... I hate that show... Too much makeup for those little girls. I didn't wear makeup until I was 13 lol :P :)

It's their parents' responsibillity to watch over them. If these girls want to get a head start on their careers and begin making a living early, I say go for it. My grandmother had her first job when she was ten years old, my grandfather when he was eight years old. They baby sat, walked dogs, did yard work, ect from a very young are and no body ever said that they were being objectified or taken advantage of. What makes modeling any different?

There are 14 year old models. Look how nice it is seeing that fourteen year old girl so covered up in the picture! He's not sleezing them and they obviously want to be models and if they don't...well, that's an entirely different issue.

Take a look at Brooke Shirlds! She modeled
Very young and went on to live a normal life while getting a great Education not to mention NOT turning up on some rag magazine in a panty-less drunken stupor like some of the girls we've been seeing the last 15 years! Good parenting is the key here not the age of models on the runway!
