Marc Jacobs Uses 14-Year-Old Models: OK or No Way?

When it comes to the catwalk, how young is too young? Marc Jacobs is under fire for sending two 14- or 15-year-old models down the runway at New York Fashion Week, The New York Times reports. But Marc Jacobs defended his use of the teens, Thairine Garcia and Ondria Hardin (pictured), in his show on Monday.

model

"I do the show the way I think it should be, and not the way somebody tells me it should be," Jacobs told the Times. "If their parents are willing to let them do a show, I don’t see any reason that it should be me who tells them that they can’t. There is no controversy," he said.

But, in fact, there is a little bit of a controversy. The Council of Fashion Designers of America asked designers not to use models under the age of 16 on their runways during Fashion Week, the Times reports. Most designers complied ... but not Jacobs.

That said, the "rule" is kind of optional. "The guidelines are suggested recommendations. They are not mandatory requirements. Each season we hope designers will follow them but it is really up to the designers to decide," CFDA President Steven Kolb told the Times. Do you think 14- and 15-year-olds are too young to walk the runway? Or is this a big deal over nothing?

As long as he keeps them dressed! That girl is showing less skin than 14 year olds walking the everyday streets.
Please Marc Jacobs, continue dressing these girls.

I've seen younger girls wearing less! Marc Jacobs, I hope you continue doing what you are doing! Maybe young girls will see such a fashion icon and line that supports wearing actual clothes and not pieces of cloth, and will start wearing clothes!

Its not a big deal. Its not like these girls are being sent down the runway without any clothes on. They look fine and their parents have agreed to it too.

As long as they are not wearing too less cloth, it shouldn't be a big deal. Shouldn't the criticism be aiming at teens and kids that wear skimpy costumes to perform a number on stage?

As long is it is not overtly sexual, I don't see a problem with this. If child labor laws are enforced how is this any different from using teens in department store catalogues or commercials?

It all depends on the child and how the rest of their life is handled by their parents. Hopefully, the parents are not exploiting the child to make money for themselves.
The really bad thing about this post is the outfit the poor kid is wearing!

Until high fashion loses it's reputation for anorexia and drug abuse, I certainly wouldn't agree with a child entering that scene.

If the girl's agreed to it, why's not? As long as the clothes she wear are age-appropriated, everything should be alright. Having her do a set of sexual photographs is still a no-no, though.

If he was designing clothes for teens it would be fine, but he's designing for adult women.

Marc Jacobs, please use women- not girls to model women's clothing. What's wrong with adult models? Stop marketing clothing to adult women and having girls parade around in it!

If I'd been offered a modeling job when I was 14 or 15, I think I'd jump at the opportunity. it's not like they're 4 or 5. They're aware of their choices and I think at that point you're old enough to handle it. Plus...look how she's dressed. She's more covered than most teenagers. I question the fashion choices, but still, she knows what she's doing. More power to her.

I don't think the problem is with the 14 yr old. The problem is using a teenager to sell clothes to an adult woman. No matter how beautiful and in shape a 30 yr old may be she does not have the frame, skin, bone structure of a 14 yr old girl. Purely from a design point of view I don't like it. I also think women have a valid argument with the fashion industry and the image they promote. Youth is a great for the young. But I would argue there is beauty in looking 30, 40, 50, and so on that has nothing to do with looking young.
By the way if you did get offered a contract you should absolutely take it. The amount of money a model could make between aged 14 and 18 could pay for any college you'd care to attend!

HA! The idea that I would be offered a modeling contract is laughable. BUT! I think certain styles look good on people of all ages, including some of Jacobs styles. If he wants to use his models to sell clothes to older women, by all means, go ahead. It's really up to the women what they wear, and if they think it looks good on them, well, more power to them, as well.

You're right that there are many styles of clothing look good on all ages. There also many that look better on older women and many that look better younger women. I posted a poll a few hours ago about this topic. Rather than bore you with my arguement go to the fashion section and read it. Send me a reply as I'd like to know what younger women think about this.

I'm kind of debating with myself on this, Yes it's great becuase Marc Jacobs clothes aren't plus if it's skimpy lingerie plus if it's their dream, let them live it. But I think the reasons for No over power the yes becuase the modelling industry is very vicous. I wouldnt want young girls to fall into the path of anorexia, sexual modeling or using the money they earn for drugs or anything else like that.

Depends on the outfit the model is wearing. Judging by the photo shown, she was dressed fancily but completely. For a bikini or lingerie show? NO ! ! !

Big deal over nothing. It'snot like they're modelling underwear... and to be fair, there are A LOT of under-16-years-old models out there, why not give them the opportunity to work the runway at NY Fashion Week?
