A man in South Dakota is suing the hospital where he was circumcised as a newborn, saying he only recently became aware that he'd undergone the procedure and that it robbed him of his sexual prowess.
28-year-old Dean Cochrun is asking for $1,000 dollars in punitive damages from Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. He claims an unknown doctor at the hospital, then named the Sioux Valley Hospital, led his mother to believe the procedure was medically necessary.
He argues the circumcision was not necessary, unethical and without medical benefit.

Should he get paid?

I retract my answer and say no, I went off the question and didn't pay attention to the article until afterward. He needs to sue his parents and see how well that goes.

His parents did not do the operation they relied on the advice of the doctor. and by the way that is starting to happen.

If he was injured as a result of the doctor error then I would agree compensation should be given to him.

Fact is that If you are born in the US being a baby boy this is general practice.
You might later in life come to the decission that you didn't wanted the procedure be preformed on you.

However to start asking for punitive damages from the hospital is, I know it is a stereotype, is a very American thing to do.

The man has nerve, being in prison for kidnapping, to ask for damages.

"Poorly performed circumcisions hold legal implications for the doctor responsible. An action could be brought against a doctor responsible on the child's behalf if the circumcision was carried out negligently. Alternatively, the child could issue such proceedings in his own name on reaching the age of 18 and the normal time limit for starting legal proceedings would run from that birthday. "

This is a decision he parents made not the hospital. Hospitals do not do procedures without parental consent. Parents always have to sign forms. This man is an absolutely fool.

He most certainly is not a fool: Poorly performed circumcisions hold legal implications for the doctor responsible. An action could be brought against a doctor responsible on the child's behalf if the circumcision was carried out negligently. The man is in prison for kidnapping at the moment.

I think he's got nerve to as for damages.

If he's in the pen for kidnapping he may have a case, they were negligent in not removing his head.

Where is the evidence there is anything about negligence?

The "negligence" was mentioned by "Kudabux" above. I was making an weak attempt at sarcastic humor, I apparently don't do it as well as, say, Disco Pickle, but it WAS an attempt. I have a bit of expertise here since I was circumcised in my 20's, for a medical reason, and I say the man has nothing to complain about...they did him a favor!

No one said it was poorly performed or that any negligence was indicated at all. The man stated that he did not even realize that he had been circumcised until just recently, that in most people opinion does make him a fool.

He has had 10 years to file the suit. The man is now in prison and looking for nothing but money out of boredom.

The statute started when he turned 18. He is now 28. I don't know how long the statute runs. If it is two years, then it is over. However, there is a legal loophole that a good attorney will find.

Actually it may even have started as late as when he turned 21 in some states. However most states only have a 2 year statute of limitations.

"saying he only recently became aware that he'd undergone the procedure"

    idgit

This guy must be very stoooooooooopid and all this proves is we are a
litigious society. Do you wonder what kind of a greedy lawyer would
even bring this suit into the court system?

Do you wonder why that increases the cost of health care......
just look at the $100,000s that doctors are forced to pay for health care.
Look at the cost to OB-GYN doctors and then wonder why some rural
communities don't even have that service anymore. It is too bad
that the Affordable Health Act did not consider this problem and did
nothing to address it even though the GOP tried to add amendments to the
    bill.............. But then Lawyers are a very important donors to the Democrats;
so it is understandable but not excusable.

I'm always shocked/surprised why US-citizens sue so much, and also for what reason!
The damages they sometimes ask and they even get those amounts of money is beyond me.

    Don't understand me wrong!
If a person has a claim for damages because something happened to him/her that is legally seen as wrong, a certain amount of money should be paid as damages. But the amounts paid in the US ar way over the moon.

It isn't about justice anymore, it is just for the money.

The only good thing ever to come out of the practice of circumcision was its disproval of Lamarckian inheritance.
