Mac users may be more well-off, but should they be directed to hotels that cost more?(Reuters) - Orbitz Worldwide Inc has found that people who use Apple Inc's Mac computers spend as much as 30 percent more per night on hotels, so the online travel agency is starting to show them different and sometimes costlier, travel options than Windows visitors see, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday

Perfectly fair. They can look elsewhere I suspect they will now in far greater numbers. Orbitz may have just killed their business.

I still do not understand why people like those things. I had to use a Mac for work for a little over a year, every day I used that thing I learned to hate more each day. All the Macs in the building were constantly crashing and slowing the work flow.

give me a PC any day.

For all those ultra Conservative Capitalists who denounce Socialistic equality, Mac has the right to send their users to pricier hotels on their travel site, and most likely get a commission for doing so.

It's not the Mac that's providing people with pricier hotel listings first. From what I understand, the travel companies are noting the Mac signature while the user searches and doing that automatically. These companies' assumptions that being I'm a Mac user that I can afford pricier hotels is absolutely ridiculous and heinous.

Sure it is. But, the beauty of capitalism is that there are other like websites that may offer different search methods that appeal to Mac users who don't like this sort of data-mined marketing strategy. I know that Orbitz is trying to appeal apparently to what the majority of Mac users *tend* to want, but I don't agree with this strategy much at all. At the very least though it just affects the order of your search result. The consumer can still reorganize the search results into least to highest priced or whatnot. I just don't appreciate the assumption, backed by data or not, that since I'm a Mac user I must have more money. >.<

Also, I use my AAA insurance to find the best hotel discounts.

If you pay too much to get a name on your computer, it stands to reason, that you'll pay too much for a hotel room. Remember Mac and airware? Some of us do and we've bought other than Apple for years..saved a bundle, too, once we got over that youthful infatuation with Apple.

Actually depending on ur trade is more correct. When dealing and working with advertising or graphic design u r more like to get a job with Mac experience. Not only that, it is NOT a rumor that Macs have less issues with viruses than Microsoft systems. I've worked on Macs since 1986. I prefer Mac. But I have also had a Dell for 12 yrs. For more money u get less headache!

Wrong. A computer isn't remotely similar to a temporary living situation. I use my computer for both work and play, but a hotel only has to be clean and quiet.

Mac solve their problem with airware by switching to the more powerful chips available in the 90's. Since then it has been mainly a matter of taste. It is true that the early Macs were superior graphic machines, but the advent of newer mother boards and more powerful chips have made that a matter of historical interest. I'll just continue on with my AMD or Microsoft chips in powerful systems for less than a grand. They go well with the clean and quiet no name hotels I've used for years. I've found hotels and computers to be exactly the same i.e.clean 'n quiet and do the job.

That graphic is a laugh riot of ignorance.

"Recently, Microsoft Office for Mac was released due to the outcries of of the lack of incompatibility at companies."

Microsoft Office was released for the Mac 5 years before it was ever released for Windows (1996 for Mac, 2001 for Windows)... and has had a "compatible" version ever since. And that is just the beginning of the idiocy.

Want a machine that runs the most software? Buy a Mac. It runs Windows beautifully.

    Not biased? LOL...

I wouldn't even know where to begin here.

    #1:
This person actually attempts to suggest that the Mac being able to run all of these OS's is a bad thing because "why would someone want to do that?"

    LOL dude..

    #2:
He actually ends this nonsensical argument (smaller set of peripherals? Is this a joke?) by saying that if you just do all of this stuff, Windows can run just as well as OS X.

I seriously think he is just jealous. He keeps saying all of these good things about OS X and then coming up with incredibly silly and completely false arguments against.

Utter. Nonsense. It gets even sillier as he goes, but not worth my time. Incredibly obtuse, and obviously never used a Mac. And, next time, come up with your own nonsense. Posting lengthy rants from neophytes does not help you.

What I get from you is that if you don't like what you hear, you just dismiss it and call it nonsense, without really backing yourself up. Then you want me to rant on and on even though it's clearly not worth your time, because obviously your time is so valuable that you replied in the first place.

He's not saying that Mac's being able to run all the OS's is a bad thing, he's saying it's an invalid argument as to it's supposed superiority. He ends his argument there by saying the only reason a Windows machine doesn't run OS X is because Apple doesn't allow it.

What good did he say about OS X? All he did was address nonsensical arguments and discuss why they were illogical.

Apple had the education market sown up totally. Teachers were afraid of PC's, but for some reason, didn't fear Mac's. My library software was PC based, and I found the Mac's totally frustrating. However, when it came time to network the district and building, Apple had NO secure network software. Apples didn't want to talk to anything but another Apple, so gradually, the Macs were replaced with PC's. Now, there are a few stand alone Macs in the building, but nothing that is networked. Apple killed the education goose all by themselves by a) not making sure they had a secure network program available, and b) making their computers unwilling to talk to anything else.
  • socokid Pele Em... 2012/06/27 14:10:20

    That is nonsense.

I am an IT professional (BTW), have been for over 20 years, more than 50% has been with Macs. Not being able to talk with anything else? What are you TALKING about? Please be specific because that is pure nonsense. We set up OS X Servers in Windows environments constantly, and securely.

Sounds like an incompetent IT team that just didn't like Apple. I see this ALL the time...

Lastly, of course you found it frustrating. Using a new OS will ALWAYS be frustrating for a bit, especially when you have been so engrained in one OS.

I know that virtually all schools switched over to PC's when Novell which was supposed to work well with both, did not work well with Macs. If you go into any public school now, their networked systems are PC's. If they have Macs for graphic design, it's a stand alone network and not connected to the main network.

The government does worse. The government actually charges you higher rates if you make more money for the same thing. All Orbitz is doing is offering as the first option the higher rates. The user can browse and select the lower ones just like everyone else. The government doesn't let you do that. You make more you pay more end of story.

As long as the government can do it on steroids why can't Orbitz do a "light" essentially voluntary version of it.
