Lindsay Ann Burke Act: Should Schools Teach About Dating Violence?

W_C October 10, 2008 18:29:28

After a horrific incident involving a 23 year old woman, named Lindsay Ann Burke, was killed due to a violent relationship with her boyfriend, schools in Rhode Island are now required to teach about dating violence. This initiate was first pushed by Ann Burke and husband, the parents of Lindsay. Knowing the signs of a violent dating relationship will hopefully help keep teens safe and learn when it's time to call for help. Other states, like Texas, encourage education on the subject of dating violence as well, but Rhode Island is making the subject a required topic in health classes.

The Lindsay Ann Burke Act will now require teens to learn about dating and the risks associated with it. Important signs to recognize, and ways to get help or say "no" to an abusive partner. This goes beyond just teaching kids about safe sex or abstinence, and about drug use... you don't need to be in a sexual relationship to have an abusive relationship.

Do you agree with Rhode Island's new educational implementation of the Lindsay Ann Burke Act: to teach students about dating violence?
Yes, I think the Lindsay Ann Burke Act is a good idea.
No. Dating, drugs and sex topics should be kept out of schools.
I think teaching kids about dating violence is...

There are so many girls who don't recognize when they're being abused...or if they do they think it's out of "love." We have to show girls (and guys as well, it's rare but they can be abused) that it's not normal for a boy to hit you out of anger, and it doesn't mean love. We need to teach them not to stand for that kind of crap or they'll just be flung from one bad relationship to the next for the rest of their lives. Many girls I've met who are or have been in abusive relationships don't seem to have a clue as to how to get out of one safely; it's like a shock to them and they don't know how to react.

Although I believe the responsibility of this belongs with the parents, I also (being a parent of 3) realize that there are more parents out there that either do not know how or just don't care enough about these issues to talk to their children.

Yes. Even in the 1970s both male and females were taught rape prevention. I imagine it was a real eye-opening experience for the guys to hear that "No" means "No."

Just put it in with sex ed. Although it really should be the parents job to tell their kids this kind of stuff they have to learn it somewhere and if they have to learn it from school so be it.

Alot of girls get into this and they dont know what to do and before they get help it's to late something bad has already happen. And i think that this will help girls avoid this and it will help them get out of it too. Also for the boys but i think they should have the girl and boys seperate.

YES. Schools are already providing Sex Ed and related health. Many parents are in the dark or denial about what goes on in their teenagers' life (not that that is an excuse or even remotely acceptable). If the schools can arm our young people with knowledge help them identify and avoid this type of violence early or before it happens perhaps we can decrease the frequency and spot abuser before that escalate to the worst possible result

We go to school to learn, and we have to learn about things that will help us in life. What happened to Lindsay is a very serious issue, and if we don't educate ourselves properly, it'll just repeat itself.
I think people need to be more open-minded about what is taught in our schools. We can't live in ignorance.

School is supposed to prepare kids for life. Omitting real and serious issues is a disservice to children.
