'Lin and Tonics,' 'Lintinis' Named After Jeremy Lin: Has Linsanity Gone Too Far?

It's official: Linsanity has swept the nation, particularly in New York City, where locals are renaming just about everything after sudden Knicks superstar Jeremy Lin. If you hate puns, you'd better stop reading now.

jeremy lin

As the hype surrounding the 23-year-old reaches a fever pitch, New Yorkers are downing "Lin and Tonics," "Lintinis" and "Lin Burgers" at their local watering holes, The New York Post reports. "This drink kicks ass, just like Jeremy Lin!" Lintini-drinker Melanie Bernstein, 25, told the Post.

At the Blarney Rock Pub near Madison Square Garden (where the Knicks play), the Lin Burger comes with bacon, cheese and barbecue sauce (for $9.95). "I’d say we’ve seen a 7 to 10 percent bump in business during Knicks games recently, which has been really nice," manager Michael Higgins told the Post.

Lugo Caffe, also near Madison Square Garden, makes a Lin and Tonic with a brown olive (meant to look like a basketball). Burger joint Shake Shack is even serving a Jeremy Lin-Mint milkshake (chocolate mint cookie flavored), the Post reports.

Meanwhile, Lin denied dating Kim Kardashian in an interview with ESPN (where did THAT one come from?). "Stuff about me dating Kim Kardashian, I mean, I have no idea where that came from and all these other rumors," he said. Are you getting in on the Linsanity? Or do you think the puns and hype have gotten out of control?

He may be the only person on the team who is not jaded yet and is actually playing for the love of the game. Leave him alone to enjoy it all without turning him into another cash machine like all the rest of pro sports players.

The people in the media are building Jeremy up so they can make a profit. Even if he starts to have bad games, the media will still make a profit. It's all about headlines and I'm starting to think journalism is dying.

Do you mean too far, as in driving it from one side of the court to the next only to hear the roaring Linenites as far as Taiwan, and back to witness the Lintastic Voyage of the Knicks to the playoffs? Then yes!

If everything else about Lin were the same, but he was black instead of Chinese, would we be hearing so much about him?

In a league where at least 70% of the players are black ... probably not.

We have a lot of interest when certain players are black or white, would we have the controversy we seem to be having now if he were black or white.... probably not.

I don't think the amount of black people playing in the NBA has a lot to do with the amount of publicity they would receive if there game stats matched Jeremy Lin's; however, I do know of a black NBA player that helped the Knicks go on a winning streak, just like Lin's with similar stats, and he received little attention for it.

During the 2010 NBA season, Raymond Felton helped the Knicks win six games in a row. The sixth win came against the Toronto Raptors when Raymond Felton hit a game wining three-pointer with 2.7 seconds left on the shot-clock. Felton finished the game with 28 points and 11 assists which gave him his 10th double-double of the season. Raymond Felton helped the Knicks win 11 out of 12 games during there winning streak; in addition, Raymond was averaging 18.6 points, 8.6 assist, 2.0 steals, and his shooting percentage was 47.1%. Interestingly, there was no Ray-sanity. So, the answer to your question is no.

Probably so but I hope the young man doesn't take it all too seriously or let it go to his head. Americans are despeate right now to find any distraction to divert their attention from more serious woes gripping the nation and this brilliant flash has come along at an opportune moment to get utilized for maximum impact and benefit.
