Levi's 'Hotness Comes in All Shapes and Sizes' Ad: OK or Offensive?

A new Levi's ad proclaims that "Hotness Comes in All Shapes and Sizes." Well, that's true, and a great message for women, too! Until you look at the ad (provided by Copyranter) and realize that all of the women are thin with very similar body types. So, what gives?

levis

The ad goes on to explain: "At Levi's, we believe that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. That's why we developed Levi's Curve ID -- a revolutionary, customized fit system focusing on a woman's shape and proportions, not her size."

Again, great idea, but the woman on the left is slim with a flattish butt and chest. The one in the middle is also slim with a curvier butt and chest. And the one on the right is also slim with a curvy butt and an even smaller waist. What happened to "all shapes and sizes"?

Feminist blog Jezebel kind of sums up the problem right here: "See, 'hotness comes in all shapes and sizes,' as long as those shapes are minute variations on the same thin, ponytailed woman." Levi's, we'll give your Curve ID jeans a try ... once you concede that "hotness" can be bigger than a size six.

They just chose 3 different types of slender models.

That's like saying, "Cat's come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors" and using this picture as the ad:

3 types slender models cats shapes sizes colors picture ad

(If you are the breeder of these cats, I found this picture on google images. No copyright infringement intended.)

I'm just asking because there is not just "one type of body" in the ad, despite what you claim to see.

So one of them has little bigger ass, not much difference otherwise.

So you finally acknowledged that your original claim that the models have the same body is wrong. Way to go. Now understand that the same pair of jeans would not fit those three models equally. I personally think a pair of pants sagging in the butt area of a girl with a flat ass is not flattering. AND THAT is why jeans for women with different curves is a GREAT idea. It's a shame that fat women don't understand the concept of a pair of jeans fitting a woman correctly.

I seriously hope the "fat woman" comment wasn't directed at me - and you should shut your mouth about people's weight.
P.S. You are a man, right? Why do you care so damn much about women's jeans? Sounds like a problem.

I care more about women's jeans than men's jeans. Why? Because I don't stare at men's asses. I can appreciate when a pair of jeans fits a woman well. Do you have a problem with that? Or are you the kind of woman who wears men's jeans because of your body shape?

I'm glad Levi's uses slender models who are in shape. I can't imagine what this country would be like if fat was the ideal. Slender women look healthy and in shape. Not women who can't fit into a pair of boots because their legs are fat. I'm tired of fat women protesting and complaining because they are too lazy to work out, and would prefer to make those women who are slender feel like dirt.

I agree. Fat shouldn't be the norm. Obviously we shouldn't make fun of overweight people, but we can't pretend they don't have a problem, either. If you're insulted by skinny people existing, or being used in ads, maybe you should get off your butt, and lose weight, instead of complaining about it. Healthy people, and random ads, cannot be held accountable for your weight, and self esteem, issues.

Actually I picked offensive because my best childhood friend was heavier than all the other girls in our grade and was bullied a lot for her weight. Yeah she isnt the most healthy person, but she's the smartest girl in our grade and the most talented. I'm just tired of people thinking just because some people are too large for their health means its okay for others to treat them badly. And society makes it appear that appearance trumps intelligence, kindness, and so many other values that mean so much more. My friend can change her weight, but those girls who were jerks to her will always be rotten.

No one is treating fat people bad. We just are not going to pretend that we are not slimmer. I am not going to be ashamed that I am not big as a house just so I don't hurt someone's feelings. MOST obese people these days in this country do NOT have a thyroid or other health issue. They have a FOOD issue. Or are you one of those people who think only American's contract the fat disease?

Ma'am I just told you there are people who are mean to others just because of their physical appearance. Im happy for you then because you've never met them but I know for a fact they exist. And yes I am well aware of the fact that most of our country's over weight population is overweight due to over eating and lack of exercise. But that doesn't give anyone the right to be hurtful. We're taught in kindergarten not to make fun of people regardless who they are and what they do.

Actually there is no law that says we have to be nice to anyone. If someone gets their feelings hurt, they have 2 choices, ignore it or change it.

I am a bigger girl myself and I could care less if advertising uses skinny girls. I like being a bigger girl and my jeans make my arse look just as good. All these people whining should either stop shoveling the fat and carbs in their mouths or be fat and shut up. In my humble opinion of course lol.

Yes. My Wife is a bigger girl (5'10, approaching 200) and I like her a LOT. And she doesn't get all uptight like these milktoast smarmy liberals (and other kinds of punks) who think the entire world must march in lockstep with them.

I say, hooray for all girls, especially the ones that aren't threatened by being left out of certain things. I can't imagine where I'd be if I got upset about every ad that didn't target me or take my feewings into account.

i said...... and PEOPLE use those mainly because they are DISABLED. i never said bigger or obese people use those mainly because they are disabled. My thinking when i said that was elderly people not obese.

no it is a result from overeating

Have you ever even seen the people who use those carts? No? I have. I do a little thing called OBSERVATION. It is where you pay attention to your surroundings. Try it sometime. I live in Florida, and most elderly people you see in a store WALK. The ones on the carts are the fat slobs. Now, kiss off.

You have serious issues. I live in VA. A few minutes away from my house are stores and i see elderly people use those kinds of carts. Obviously I observe. To answer your question Have you ever even seen the people who use those carts? DUH!!! or i wouldnt have mentioned it. But whatever. you are a big girl hating on people judging others for no reason other than their weight. You and and your friend Peter and GHNNC are bullies that make fun of bigger people because they are big and you make the assumption that all big people are lazy. but that isnt true.
