Levi's 'Hotness Comes in All Shapes and Sizes' Ad: OK or Offensive?

A new Levi's ad proclaims that "Hotness Comes in All Shapes and Sizes." Well, that's true, and a great message for women, too! Until you look at the ad (provided by Copyranter) and realize that all of the women are thin with very similar body types. So, what gives?

levis

The ad goes on to explain: "At Levi's, we believe that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. That's why we developed Levi's Curve ID -- a revolutionary, customized fit system focusing on a woman's shape and proportions, not her size."

Again, great idea, but the woman on the left is slim with a flattish butt and chest. The one in the middle is also slim with a curvier butt and chest. And the one on the right is also slim with a curvy butt and an even smaller waist. What happened to "all shapes and sizes"?

Feminist blog Jezebel kind of sums up the problem right here: "See, 'hotness comes in all shapes and sizes,' as long as those shapes are minute variations on the same thin, ponytailed woman." Levi's, we'll give your Curve ID jeans a try ... once you concede that "hotness" can be bigger than a size six.

They just chose 3 different types of slender models.

That's like saying, "Cat's come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors" and using this picture as the ad:

3 types slender models cats shapes sizes colors picture ad

I'm not easily offended, but that skinny look doesn't work at all for me. If that's the way your body is, fine, there's nothing wrong with that. But for a company or should I say most companies always show the skinny legged women making you think that that is what looks good, and women should strive for that, please don't. When an actress or models legs are thinner than my biceps, it is not a good look, at least in my opinion.

I find it very offensive that they had the nerve to say "Hotness comes in all shapes and sizes" without even showing models who are fat, or average weight even. All of these models are thin, and sure some of them have a ~slightly~ curvier butt or bust but other than that, where are the other "shapes and sizes" they are talking about? Oh, they're ignoring them. FAT PEOPLE DONT EXIST WOOPSPSS

It's ok, cos its leading to healthier way.
But i'd also like to remind, that including the body shapes people have different TASTES also. So, if you like chubby one, go ahed, if you like skinny one, go ahead. If you like bi, trans, gay, lesbian etc. What ever go ahead.
It's your taste and you dont have to change it ,cos other people like it something else than what you are.

These are the kind of articles and questions that make overweight and obese people with risk of diabetes, heart diseases, osteoarthritis, certain types of cancer and high cholesterol that being like that is fine.
No, I don't support ED's. I support healthy lifestyles. People need to know that eating disorders come in any shape and size. That size 14 woman you see might be anorexic and is getting no nutrition, and that size 2 woman might be eating little quantities of junk food and not getting any nutrition either.
I think the three women in the article make it clear:
you can have a round or a flat butt, big or small breasts, it is all good. "Obesity" and "Anorexia/Bulimia" are both bad.
Those models look perfectly healthy to me.

It may have been necessary to use similar shaped models, in order to point out the areas that the add was focusing on (butt, waist, length etc.) This picture is advertising jeans for different shapes of skinny, just like others advertise different shapes in plus sizes...

I picked 'OK' because I don't think it's 'Offensive'. That said, I do think it's misleading in a way. As so many have pointed out, a slogan of "all shapes and sizes" should be depicted by models of all shapes and sizes, or at least 3 different shapes and sizes if the ad uses 3 models. I have *no* problem with them marketing towards women of essentially one body type, if that's what they so choose to do; however, the ad should be sloganed appropriately, if that was the case.

It's not exactly offensive, it's just a little hypocritical ... Levis just does not want to break the "status quo" which the media has already done a great job of outlining. Skinny is sexy , Round is fat. However , I would not call it out as offensive.

First, they need to compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. Meaning, they can't have three different sized models with larger, flatter, or curvier behinds. They need similar sizes, so you know what they are talking about. Have you ever had the problem that your ass won't fit in some brands of jeans--because you have a different body style than that brand carries?? This is what Levi's are trying to show. STOP TRYING TO BE POLITICALLY CORRECT and realize what is trying to be accomplished here.

Well, not "offensive" per se, but pretty misleading. The only difference in "shapes and sizes" I see between the 3 models is that their butts go from small to big(ish). They're all even the same height! Not very "diverse" in my opinion. If I was a woman I'd probably be annoyed by this misrepresentation.

Plus sized women need to buy clothes from a place that sells clothes for plus sized women.
"Hottness comes in all shapes and sizes" Does NOT translate to "Fat people should wear these jeans." But i may be mistaken, my English is a little rusty...
I have nothing against overweight people, but seriously, don't get so butt hurt, please?
And honestly i think the skinny women are making a bigger deal out of this, you dirty attention whores... :]

I think it's fine. The girls are different shapes so they would require different jeans, it isn't a brand for plus sizes or even an ad for them, but more so about the shape and right fit.. nothing wrong with using slender models, it's why they are models.
