Lanvin Uses Nine Real People For Fall 2012 Campaign: Do We Even Need Professional Models?

Having done one semi-awkward professional photo shoot and watching countless reruns of America's Next Top Model on Virgin America flights, I can attest to the fact that modeling is not as easy as it looks. However, it's definitely not something that only highly trained professional models can do either.

Parisian fashion house Lanvin, proved this point with their new ad campaign in which they hired ordinary people to model their latest designs. So, it's got me thinking: Do we even need professional models -- or should "real people" be the "real models"?

BUSINESSINSIDER.COM reports:
They have real jobs, kinda.

I never knew that models were "fake" people. Use your heads guys, they found people with a certain look (like the girl, who is very pretty), and then PAID them to do their photoshoot. How do you think professional models come into existence?

No..lol..it's not an assumption that just because they walk on the ramp it means they are uneducated and therefore unable to look for another job..for models who work to their bones(literally here), I can see how their efforts are going to waste if they can no longer do what they starved themselves for..it would be a good thing though that they can feed themselves and have a healthier job..However, I do know girls who actually depend on modelling for a living..

once you've become accustomed to making millions per year, its difficult to settle for a 40,000 annual salary---thats just human nature.

They way clothing looks on a model isn't exactly realistic to how it would look on the other 90% of the populace.

I think for the harder scenes and poses, you still need professionals or at least people who have experience in modeling. For pictures like the ones above, not so much.

Th phrasing threw me off too.

But then again, the question is "do we 'need' models?"

Personally, I 'need' things like air & water, maybe a little sustenance...

The whole industry is grotesque in its use of girls as young as 13 to advertise products aimed at women.

I agree that it is not ethically right to use 13-year-olds (in my opinion, 16 should be a minimum age), but the industry itself is certainly not grotesque. On average, 7,000,000 people are employed for just ONE fashion company in total. 7,000,000 more people with jobs thanks to the industry. Also, fashion and industries that are related to it (modeling, photography, etc.) are an ART. The fashion industry basically supplies pieces of art created by an artist who crafter and designed the work of art. Photographs with models? They are art too. And like any art, it's a form of self-expression. Fashion has been mart of the world's history since the beginning of times when people started to clothe themselves.
In conclusion, fashion is part of our economy, our daily life, self-expression and history, whether you like it or not. So if you don't like the industry, it's fine, your opinion. But calling it grotesque just because a couple of the people involved lack ethics? Certainly not.

Models are not just any kind of people. Sure, you don't need a big title to be a model, or years of studying in college, but it is not as easy as it looks. Not many people can work from 4 in the morning until 8 PM with one short break or none at all. Model Caroline Trentini usually walks in 110 runways in three days during Fashion Month and there are hardly any breaks to rest, eat and sleep. After work, models leave fatigued and what they do isn't easy peasy either. It is not just put your hands on your hips and smile... You have to know how to SELL a product, make it look glamorous and make art with the photographer. Sometimes they tell you the shoot will be four hours long and you end up staying for eight or nine. Sometimes employers take advantage of younger girls. Sometimes they have to work in dangerous conditions and the money isn't that great unless you're a supermodel... and that's very hard to achieve. Modeling takes dedication and concentration, which is why it is not for everyone. You can't just do it "part-time" while doing another day job too. Everything requires professionals.

They can work such long hours because they don't need to stop to eat...just a quick hit of speed & they're right back at it!

I know some models and many eat super small portions of high-protein/fibre foods a lot of times a day. I heard doing that speeds up metabollism and that way it is hard to be hungry. It makes sense as I believe they only get small breaks (5-10 minutes maybe, without counting hair and makeup and wardrobe) between shows and shoots. But of course they eat. Every organism must eat!

excellent point!! they DO eat, its just that these people have to find some way to justify thier thinness, making it seem as far out there from what the rest of us do as possible; if these models are doing things that we can all do (like eating small portions several times a day), then what justification do the rest of us have for not doing the same thing and looking hte same way?

if they never ate, their bodies would go into starvation mode, start storing fat, and they'd begin to GAIN weight.

Thank God, someone who understands. If all models really were anorexic, they'd be storing fat as soon as they ate something, and I'm pretty sure they would not like that. And we have visual proof that models eat...

If they only ate that between long periods of time, they would be fat. And you can see what they eat: healthy, nutritious food.
Kudos to you for explaining that! ;-)

The industry needs people who this is their job. However, I think scouting out real people for ads would be a great idea. For example, want to portray a scientist....go find, I don't know, a scientist...they would be a better model anyway (b/c then it is a charactercher) . Find people who fit the role, in some cases, that IS models, in others that is people who don't pose for a living.

But isn't the point supposed to be to show how the clothes look on a person? So wouldn't a "regular" looking person be more beneficial so that real women can have some idea what it will look like on them?

Everything needs a profession, I think... It's really not as easy as it looks, just like acting. I'd say the people in these photos were posed very particularly; a professional model doesn't need that instruction. It would have been time consuming and frustrating to work with people who don't know exactly what they're doing, and it's the same in everyday things such as banking; you need to know what you're doing in order to do it properly and efficiently.
I do applaud them for using "ordinary" people, though. I think it's wonderful.

It definitely a great idea, we need more companies to use "real" women, but not in this sense. It's wonderful, but it's amateurs doing a professional's job.

IMO Lavin has perhaps offered the worst fashion line ever Corporate has a tete a tete to figure how to sell it)..How to detract from the fashion being less than stellar average at best? Put it on average at best people and hype the campaign by publicly stating so...ridiculous really.
