Lana Del Rey has been a divisive figure in the media recently. The 26-year-old sultry singer is adored by her many fans but often bashed by music critics who aren't particularly fond of her live performances. Part of the controversy was that some suggested she only found success due to her looks. While that is still up for debate, it's clear that Lana Del Rey has her looks to thank for her new gig, as she is the face of H & M in their new advertising campaign. Regardless of what you think about her music, do you think she makes a good model?

YES! Her looks are so hypnotizing, she is gorgeous! With the help of makeup, of course. And Photoshop etc.
As for her voice, I think it is as sultry as her looks, but I will agree that her live performances aren't as strong. This is because of the studio tricks that she uses, such as layering, which cannot very well be produced live on stage.
I would suggest that she reduce this in order to give better performances. However, to those who are used to Autotune, they will never like true talent like Lana del Rey. I like her live, personally.
She only found success because of her loks? Well duh! You can't get anywhere in entertainment without being good looking! Its the rule! That doesn't make her untalented in any way.

Well if singing is the profession you have chosen, then you should be good at it or you won't last long. So if you aren't a good performer....huh? Maybe she should take up the modeling gig, she seem better suited for it then whatever that was she was doing before.

The fact that she isn't a good performer does not mean she can't learn or that she can't sing. The SNL performance wasn't good, but in the Radio 1 studios she did pretty well. She also did a hypnotixing acoustic on another American show. Singers don't get it right 100% every time, exept perhaps a legend like Frankin and Houston.

Yeah, maybe it was just a bad night. But I have heard her one other time, and she needs more than lessons. A new line of work would be better. That is a cut throat business, and just being a pretty face isn't going to work for long. You have to have some natural ability before you can get any help from singing lessons. She looked like she was either scared to death or just death.

I would have to prove you wrong here. Being a pretty face can work: why the hell are Rihanna and Katy Perry unfortunately still in the music business? Rihanna is crap live, noone talks about that.
I think she needs coaching too. However, to have her leave the music industry would be a shame. She wrote every single song on her album, and such hard work is rarely seen in most pop artists. There's nothing in Del Rey that a vocal coach can't fix. Perhaps she just needs to get over the ego and hire one. Opera singers use one, and they are professionals.

I think you have to have some natural talent to start with, before ANY kind of vocal coaching will work. Not everyone can sing, otherwise every kid would want to do that, instead of being a doctor or whatever. I don't disagree with you on the others you mentioned either. But I don't think Katy Perry is too bad. I have only heard these people on TV, so maybe it was their sound managers that didn't help.
But from what I did hear of Lana Del Ray she may have a great amount of writing talent, she should continue to do that and just let someone else sing them. She could make more money.

I would have to disagree about her letting others sing. Artists tend to be very high handed about using songwriters, and often take more songwriting credit than is due to them because they feel that they are doing the writer a favour by recording their song.
One of Avril Lavigne's songwriters stepped out to say exactly what I have just typed. One of B.o.B's songwriters has also spoken out.

But the problem being do you want to hear a great song but a bad singer, or a great song done by a great singer. She would still carry all the rights to the music if she wrote that too. But at the least the words. And could make a lot of money from royalty checks, anytime someone used her song. I'm much older than you are, so the one who comes to mind is Bob Dylan. Some people loved is voice, others hated it. But not one person EVER disliked the song and it's message. I would rather hear that then suffer through that horrible voice. Sorry that's the way I feel about her. I can't really say her songs are bad or good because I can't get past that horrible voice of hers.

No, you have made a good point. Persoanlly, I like her contralto, although I still class Amy Winehouse's as the best.
I am 17, and I still feel pop has deteriorated since then, so maybe you are right.
By the way, is it true that a song by Bob Dylan condemning racial discrimination was banned from going on TV or sth?

But she sounds good in the studio. To be honest, I think 'Blue Jeans' is one of the best songs of the past two years at least. Yes, she isn't good live, but at least she doesn't use Autotune, like Britney. And she is way better than generic trash like Rihanna, who DEFINITELY cannot sing.

I agree about Rihanna - awful "singer." Awful all around Pop artist. Lana sounds ok, I enjoy the album, but she is not a great singer. I've never seen her live.
