South Koreans have started studying Jewish laws to mimic the success of the Jewish people. The high standard for education in Korea has led their academic leaders to a new conclusion: "We believe that if we teach our children Talmud, they will also become geniuses."

Jameel reports in the Muqata blog:
Close to 50 million people live in South Korea, and almost everyone is taught the Talmud at home by their parents. "We tried to understand why the Jews are geniuses, and we came to the conclusion that we think it is because they study Talmud," said the Korean ambassador to Israel, Mr. Young Sam Ma. And this is how "Rav Papa" became a more well known scholar in Korea than in Israel.

Wikipedia defines the Talmud: The Talmud (Hebrew: תַּלְמוּד talmūd "instruction, learning", from a root lmd "teach, study") is a central text of mainstream Judaism. It takes the form of a record of rabbinic discussions pertaining to Jewish law, ethics, philosophy, customs and history.
"We tried to understand why the Jews are geniuses, and we came to the conclusion that we think it is because they study Talmud," said the Korean ambassador to Israel, Mr. Young Sam Ma.

Studying the Talmud differs from other texts. The Talmud teaches the core of Judaism -- a religious doctrine based on the word of G-d according to Jews. Koreans appreciate the values within the Talmud as fundamental to a strong family and society. "In the Jewish tradition, family values are important," explains the South Korean Ambassador.

The Talmud compels parents to teach their children. The Talmud existed over 1,500 years before public education and teachers unions, and Koreans consider it the basis for creating "geniuses."

Should more parents, cultures and schools teach Judaism as an academic curriculum? Can you teach Talmud in public schools without violating the First Amendment? Can non-Jews benefit from studying the Talmud?

Hard to argue with results. I work with a Korean nurse who grew up in South Korea. She is one of the smartest people you would ever want to meet and a very hard worker.

Absolutely. As to the question in the body of this poll, I think all religions should be taught and I don't think it violates the First Amendment in the slightest bit. They contain a history, they contain a philosophy on life, they contain laws and morals.. The more information you have the more choices you have available to you. And it's learning, understanding. I would think this would be a REQUIREMENT, actually. Fits in well with the rest of the courses.

Studying other religions can help you understand why people do what they do. It can help you to know their world views on things, too. It's not a bad idea to study other cultures, religions and nationalities.

Sounds like they're using psychology,( the end justifies the means/ and a form of deception) morality, traditions, and values, just won't work without God,,God gave Torah to the Jewish people for a purpose, can they keep the 613 laws? if the Jewish people can't keep them, and they have God. what makes Koreans or anyone else think that just living the Torah without him, will succeed? people can't just pick and choose what they want from God's blessings.....

It's probably not going to hurt them any, as long as they don't regard it as the Word of God, just a challenging documentary on Jewish interpretation of the Scripture.

Now if they could only get the Jews to read the Talmud we might be making progress.

I've often found it interesting that Judiasm is a such a force for morality, but so many "Jews" (not real practicing ones) are so immoral. They really need to start doing this in Isreal.

Jews have the highest rates of secularism.

Since Judaism is both a religion and an ethnic group you can have large numbers of Jews that do not believe in Judaism.

They're missing the point. An honest work ethic and a strive for family and faith isn't something you get by forcing your kid to read the Talmud as if it were a Math text-book. Asians and Koreans have hard-wired themselves to treat everything in Life as a test that you can create a study-guide for. The idea of figuring things out for yourself and independently learning religions is the cornerstone of a rich and fulfilling life of discovery.

Without a doubt studying the Talmud will provide a good education, but I think it is the Jewish culture which stresses the importance of family, tradition, education and hard work that is more important to emulate. I know the above values come from the Talmud but knowledge of a text without changing your culture won't get you any closer to your goal.

What the Koreans in the story are doing is little more than a belief in magic. But I am a great believer in knowledge, so in general I very much support the study of all cultures and religions in what they can teach about the human condition: and that includes the rich written tradition of rabbinic Judaism.

i am Christian but have read parts of the talmud. i think it should be part of christian reading. it is very deep and spiritual. Jewish kids who study the talmud, ortodox mostly, are not on the streets using dope, getting pregnant, locked up or shooting at each other. the talmud should be viewed to use a christian saying...as a shining city on a hill.
