Knife Gets Past Airport Security, But Not Water Bottle: Do you feel safe in airports?

Kira June 11, 2009 23:46:42

Adrian Elvy, 39, accidentally left a six-inch knife in his luggage before traveling to Bristol Airport to Spain for a company trip. Passing through airport security, Elvy was stopped by security for a water bottle he had in his bag. But security did not see the knife.

Adrian Elvy did not realize he had left the knife until he later rummaged through his bag for some money. Elvy turned the knife in where it was returned after he returned from Spain.

Despite the international airport security hikes that occurred after 9/11, do you feel any safer in airports? Or is this whole nonsense of taking off your shoes, belt, and jacket just a nuisance?
Airport security spotted a water bottle but not a knife? Maybe declothing is waste of time...
Knives getting past airport security is unlikely. I still feel safe...
I'm glad Adrian Elvy turned in the knife at Bristol Airport. I think...

thats CRAZY. i dont know that i would say that i dont feel safe at an airport just not that one. i dont know how they didnt get it because every airport that i know make not only u but all ur stuff go threw a metal detector and i dont know how they wouldnt find the knife. weird and careless thats all i can say

A large quantity of knives don't set off metal detectors. I've made the mistake of carrying one through three times now without realizing it. Usually I empty my pockets before even arriving at the airport, so I rarely double check once running through checkpoints. All three times I forgot (I carried one with me usually because of my old job), I was sent through without incident. The composition of many knives is similar to that of many belts, which only one of mine out five sets off a detector. If someone wants to bring in a knife, they can bring in a knife, in ANY airport in the country. That's just the way it is.

You can bring food through security checkpoints, just not liquids. I always bring food with me, then just buy a drink in the airport and carry it all onto the plane with me.

Overall the security checks are a good thing, but that everyone makes mistakes and this was a freak miss. Besides, if airports were to get rid of these policies all anyone would do would be complain that they don't care about the public's safety.

LOL! I know laughing isn't the best thing to do, but something similar happened to my dad. They allowed him with a huge filter tank, but when he had to bring in his tool belt, they stopped him! That was before 9/11!
But seriously, did they even USE the x-ray machine for luggage? Or did they even LOOK at it? I guess some places are still unaware of how security is s'posed to be...

If you've ever looked at luggage going through an x-ray, it's ridiculously complicated to see everthing. You're looking at multiple items stacked on top of each other, but in a 2-D environment. The lines run over each other and it's the difficult job of the viewer to interpret the multiple lines and create a mental 3-D picture. With enough crap tossed in, it's easy to miss items here and there.

The shoe thing is only because of that idiot who brought flammable chemicals in his shoes and tried to light them while on the plane. It almost worked for him, and the people themselves cried for that new policy.

It is just a little knife. They might not have meant any harm. My dad has a knife and he just likes it 'cause it's convenient and it's cool! But not if you kill some one. This question is ridicules
