Fark reports that Kentucky Fried Chicken has teamed up with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for one of the most counter-productive campaigns we've ever seen.

For every half-gallon of soda you purchase from KFC (that's "56 spoonfuls of sugar" according to Fark), they will donate one dollar to diabetes research.

In case you don't believe it, here's one of the ads.

spoonfuls sugar fark donate dollar diabetes research case ads

I guess it could be considered paying a debt to society since sugary drinks lead to diabetes. I do not drink soda nor have I been to a KFC in years.

Is this the definition of irony? When you are consuming something that will give you diabetes in order to donate money to research a cure?

I mean I understand what they're trying to do. JDRF allows KFC to promote their business and KFC gives business to JDRF. It's a weird mash-up of give and take.

Okay, that's like Budwiser saying they'll donate money to Alcoholics Anonymous every time someone buys a whole keg of beer, or Mortan salt saying they'll donate to hypertension research if you use 5 times the normal amount of salt. It's beyond stupid, it's damaging. It does remind me of the ads the Florida board of education spent 1.2 million dollars on. Billboards that read "If you can't read this, we can help". I've recently listened to a podcast where the research found Americans to be 24 pounds fatter on average than just 30 years ago. They also found that we will eat what's put in front of us portion wise. In other words, the mega meals will be consumed in their entirety if purchased. It's a vicious cycle when you think about it from a socioeconomic perspective. Let's face it, eating healthy is VERY expensive. If a family has only, say, $10-13 to spend on dinner and there are 2 adults and 3 kids. They can get "more food" for their $ at McDonald's buying a big bag of $1 hamburgers vs less food that's better for them at the store. We're conditioned from birth to believe More is Better! The lower the economic group, the less available fresh food, and the greater number of fast food chains. It's a disheartening cycle. It's also clear that the number of type 2 diabetics is slewed to their eating habits and (again) socioeconomic standing.

Michigan has a program for Food Stamp recipients. They get double for every dollar spent at the Farmer's Market with local farmers helping them to afford fresh fruits and vegetables. Other states should take note.

They are simply taking something that is sold everyday and donating a portion of that to help in diabetes research. They are not forcing anything down anyone's throat.

Actually the ingredient rebiana is an ingredient of stevia leaves.

Stevia: the plant with a sweet secret

Sweetness born from a leaf, not in a lab. Meet the stevia plant. The proud parent of our natural sweetener. People have been sweetening foods and beverages with stevia leaves for hundreds of years. The taste comes from a natural ingredient from the leaves called rebiana.

Eating too much fried greasy chicken and drinking sugary sodas will help make a person become a diabetic. The last time I visit KFC that had started serving baked chicken also which is much better than their fried greasy chicken. I stopped drinking any kind of sodas.
