Katie Holmes Goes on a Post-Divorce Shopping Spree: Is Shopping Therapeutic?

You!
Add Photos & Videos
Post-divorce Katie Holmes has moved on from Tom Cruise in every way, including her appearance. After marrying Tom, Katie's style significantly matured and while she always looked classy and put together, she definitely looked older than her age.

Embracing the "out with the old, in with the new" mentality, Holmes recently went on a shopping spree at Barney's and supposedly dropped over $14,000 on lingerie, and thousands on 15 pairs of Christian Louboutin shoes. Along with this, she bought "a closet worth" of sexy cocktail dresses and suits.

It's true that looking great can help you feel great, so it makes sense that Katie would want to reinvent herself and her look now that she's single again. Most of us could never shell out $14K for sexy lingerie, but can you relate to the concept? Is shopping therapeutic?

I think it is. I used to chide my sweetie for going to the market or store for one item and coming home with a basket full. She always said, "Alex, (she always called me Alex when she was disturbed with me or explaining complex things to me) you just don't understand." She was right. My wife has been in Heaven liking two weeks being three years now. Since she left to go ahead, I have never gone to a store and came out with just one item. Never. And now, when I sometimes have to wait for 30 to 45 minutes at the Walmart pharmacy for a prescription to be filled, I gaily push a cart around the store and shelf shop. When I was there with my sweetie, having to just wait, it was irritating. Now that I do it myself, it is kind of pleasant. Interesting. Thanks for the question...Memories...

I guess it can be if you have enough money.

Getting rid of Tom Cruise should be therapeutic, all the more so.

I like to take out (and give to charity) everything that reminds me of the bad and replace them with new things, to make new (hopefully good) memories with.

Not unless you have more money than you know what to do with.

The rest of us have bills to pay. If you throw away money on a shopping spree you may not be able to pay the bills--then you get depressed.

I don't think it's going to solve anything - but is it fun? Sure. She can more than afford it - and can decide what to do with her money. Is it something I would do? Hardly - but my life isn't even close to being the same. I still find thrift shopping fun and relaxing at times though (dollar stores can be massive amounts of fun!).

Piffle, Cruise is paying additionally for his daughters complete care (as he should of course) and that he will do willingly because he clearly loves his daughter. No one spends 400 k a year on a kid who is being supported by their father -

up to 400k a year, its child support, to only be spent on suri, thats how child support works, i would be trying to spend as much as possible too, but she will lose it all if she is caught spending it on herself.

I am happy for Kate, why not buy a few new things to make herself look and feel pretty.
I have always enjoyed change and moving on with things.
I think people who get stuck in the past have a hard time dealing with life in the long run : )

Yes, let's tell that to all the depressed sweatshop workers in China: oh you're depressed? Don't worry...just spend $14,000 on clothes! That will make you happy!

Only in a consumerism ridden cesspool like what our society has become could purchasing more items be considered a form of "therapy." And we wonder why the world hates us so much.
  • addie bryguy 2012/08/30 07:54:31
    addie
You have made me need to go buy something. lol
The world hates us for our consumerism as it gets more like us that way. They hate us for other reasons more than our consumer mentalities. And everyone that is a shopper type, does not buy from sweat shop companies. You know what, "fair trade," is? Stop being so mean.
  • bryguy addie 2012/08/30 08:06:00
    bryguy
Buying more junk is not "therapeutic," if anything it is just a band aid to cover up your problems.
  • addie bryguy 2012/08/31 03:06:11
    addie
    Maybe you buy junk.
