Kate Middleton's Wedding Dress Fails to Set Trends: Did You Like the Look?

Everyone thought that whatever Kate Middleton wore to the royal wedding would set the standard for bridal gowns for years to come. But so far, this is not the case.

kate middleton wedding dress

At Bridal Fashion Week in New York, designers scoffed at the notion of Middleton as trend setter, especially when it comes to the famous long sleeves. "That dress silhouette already existed," designer Gregory Nato told The Wall Street Journal. "Other designers copied that and had it on the runway right away, but what we noticed though, is that nobody bought it.

"The trend is going the exact opposite," Nato added. “A modern bride is creating an original event for herself. She’s bringing her personality into it. Tea length is huge. Most of our dresses are tea length. If you’re spending a lot of money on shoes, why is it covered by the dress?”

We'll admit that we were slightly disappointed by Kate's dress, though the long sleeves did seem appropriate for a princess. The best part about the gown was how it revealed Middleton's impossibly slim waist and enviable figure (and let's face it, that's what brides care about the most, royal or not).

But for the average bride, long sleeves are a little too old-fashioned -- and not very sexy. Do you agree?

I liked the look, and certainly don't agree about the sleeves. I think they add more class to the look than most brides seem to try to have anymore. I could never appreciate a tea-length wedding dress. Tea-length is, quite frankly, NOT a gown, and I think that brides should wear gowns.

That dress is as trend-setting as a linen tablecloth but with less imagination applied to its design.

It was HER dress. But it wasn't in sync with much of what I see in ads today, so why would any modern bridezilla be swayed by it?

I actually really liked her wedding dress. I thought it was very elegant and she looked very beautiful in it. Just what a princess should wear for her wedding!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The dress is beautiful, but not very many people will be able to afford it.

I did like that dress. Very tasteful, lady-like, elegant and ultra pretty. And I'm glad it isn't setting some trend so that everybody goes out and wants a dress just like Kate. How boring is that?

Besides, weddings are different for everyone. Wear the dress you want to wear, not what's "in style".

Tradition is always better for weddings. Can you imagine looking at the framed wedding photo above your mantle in 20 years and laughing, or gasping in horror and taking it down!

She had to have a train to have any presence in Westminster Abbey. The place is huge. The long train serves to "fill up" some of that space.

The dress was pretty, but it was kind of blah. I absolutely hated that garish thing that Diana wore when she married Charles. That huge skirt with those billowing sleeves and that endless train - her dress itself indicated she was overcompensating. Kate's dress was quite different and showed a totally different mindset. So, from that standpoint, I liked the dress. But it was not what I was expecting. I guess I wanted her to blow us all away, and she looked lovely but rather blah. What I really hated was the way her hair was done. She has such lovely hair, and when I read that she intended to wear it down, I was happy about that and thought, "Smart girl, you know what looks good on you." Then they pulled it back and tucked it under somehow creating a very nerdy look. I use nerdy simply for lack of a better word for it. I did not like the veil or the tiara. Now take a look at Pippa - just standing there with that long hair falling down her back and that plain dress clinging to her like a very fashionable glove. She made the splash that day. It's a shame for Kate that happened, but she should have had the foresight to see that her sister was going to get all the attention in that very form fitting dress.

People shouldn't follow 'trends' for anything, much less a wedding dress. It's your wedding wear what makes you comfortable, not because it's trending.

I think it looks beautiful on her even though it isn't my style. She rocked it...FOR HER. I personally got married on a Friday the 13th in a blood red/burgundy colour with my hair done curly and blonde!. Everyone's wedding should tell their own story, in my humble opinion, not someone else's.

I think everyone liked the dress but I didn't believe it'd set for a new trend. She kind of went old style with the lacey thing she did over her chest and arms. I think brides prefer showing skin more so than what Princess Kate did.

Everyone who I know watched the wedding, loved her dress but wouldn't want to wear it for their own wedding.
