Some individuals would argue that competitive eating is wasteful and may have adverse health issues for participants. On the other side, the amount of food wasted is minimal compared to what one U.S. family throws out on a daily basis. Further, some would say that competitive eating is purely for entertainment and is a tradition that has been carried on for years. Do you think competitive eating is OK? Or should it be banned due to health issues and waste?

Both give a good overview on the issue. Many people are using services provided. However, food banks are simply unable to keep up with the demand.
This is also not including that many food banks have a limit to how much food you can get at one time and during the month. A family might be able to get enough food for their entire family to get three meals a day for three days, but it's limited to twice a month. That's less than a weeks worth per month. Spending the gas to go all over the city to regularly go to several different places pretty much defeats the purpose cause they are spending even more on fuel.
Countless families make enough money to not qualify for food stamps, but what they make is STILL not enough to actually make ends meet and still below the poverty line. Mostly these are people who have been hit hard by the economy or been dropped by insures due to them having the "audacity" of actually getting sick, and now have half (or less) of the income they've had before or have a mountain of unexpected medical bills. And there are actually people who want to get rid of reduced/free lunches in schools, and food stamps, as well as many other programs that would actually help people! (And in the same breath see no problem with the waste of food that is eating contests.)
there's nothing wrong with competitive eating, hell i won the county fair's pie eating contest one year!
just kidding, congrats!
Some 'freedoms' aren't worth protecting.
Having said that, though, these "competitive eating" contests disgust me. There's an obesity epidemic in America, stomach cancer and colon cancer rates are skyrocketing, and there are millions of starving people around the world. With all those problems, these eating contests are an absolute disgrace.
But that's not sufficient reason to ban them. I just choose not to watch them, and I encourage others to not watch them as well.
