J.K. Rowling, the creator of the infamous "Harry Potter" series, is now attempting to cater to adults in her new book titled "Casual Vacancy." The British author will find out if she's successful on Sept. 27, when more than two million hardcover copies of her first novel for adults hit U.S. bookstores, along with the digital edition.

The book will also be simultaneously released in the U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. Do you think J.K. Rowling will be able to gain a following from the adult crowd?

USATODAY.COM reports:
'Harry Potter' author's new book is a "completely different concern," in totally different book world.

Well, she already has. I appreciate the Harry Potter novels now, at the age of 24, more than I did when I was 12.

"Do you think J.K. Rowling will be able to gain a following from the adult crowd?"
What a strange thing to say. As others have said before me, she already has a very large adult fanbase.

First of all, Harry Potter wasn't just for kids, lots of adults read and continue to read them, second of all, her original fan base are now adults, so really it's a pretty smart move

Considering how many adult fans she already has, I don't think she'll have much trouble.

She already has. Plenty of adults have read her HP series.

There are definitely adult themes in that book. It's surprisingly heavy for a kids series.

When I read them as a kid, I didn't even notice some of the deeper themes. As a teen I notice more while rereading, and I'm sure even more will be uncovered every time I go back. It's just one of those timeless stories that very rarely comes around.

Same! I read them this year, rereading them again. I never noticed how deep and dark the series is either, the fifth book especially.

Surely! You know how many adults are Harry Potter fans? Just because kids could understand HP doesn't mean that adults can't be fans as well. She is surely capable of doing so, she already has!

Of course, it just depends on the adult. I personally can't read fiction anymore. I have to learn something about the real world if I'm going to read.

She already has an adult fanbase: the Harry Potter fanbase is made up of a good portion of adults these days because the people who grew up with Harry are grown up now. Not to mention the fact that the last two Harry Potter books are so dark that I wouldn't think of handing them off to anyone much younger than twelve-- she's already proved she can write for a more mature audience.

I wasn't fond of her romance in book six, though. She should steer clear of that genre.

I feel exactly the same way. Particularly about the romance. Book six would surpass book four for me as my favourite book if it weren't for the romance. But I appreciate it would not have been very realistic to completely pretend that no romance would occur once the characters reached a certain age.

Still, I doubt she will venture into writing novels that are romance-heavy; I'm sure she realises it is not her strong point.

Oh, so you're against television shows, too then. What about comedy? Why don't you just make your own jokes instead of going to see someone else make jokes? This is a ridiculous statement. There's places that a carefully crafted novel can go that nobody can reach with their imagination alone. And dreams have no internal logic, nor do many people even have the ability to remember them. So saying "go to sleep and make your own" is ridiculous. Do you realize how much work goes into making a novel make sense, have a compelling story and characters, and making everything connect (every line of dialogue is relevant, every action significant)? Novels tell stories that the average person would be completely unable to just "come up with and fantasize about" themselves.

Furthermore, novels do teach things-- moral lessons, and on random trivia that the novel may mention, ect. They can inspire people to take their words to heart. Can you deny that George Orwell's use of fiction in 1984, for example, did not succeed in warning about the dangers of communism in a way that no essay possibly could? There's a lot to learn from fiction hidden behind the words which tell compelling stories.

Well then let's see you make a story with decent characters, original places, a interesting plot, and a dialogue that doesn't suck. By the way according to your logic we shouldn't listen to music by other people then are ourselves. I mean why should we just listen to other people? We should just make our own songs! Making music is easy....(sarcasm).

This is one of the stupidest things I've read. People read fiction to be entertained. I write fiction so others will be entertained.

Just because you don't accept it, doesn't make it wrong.

As much as I love Harry Potter, I will not read her book. Not because I don't think it will be good, but because what she is writing about does not interest me. And It's kind of sad when the main character's name is Barry, when it rhymes perfectly with Harry..

I don't know where all this apprehension, about whether or not it will be a good book. True she's deviating from what she's known for. But the thing that I think most critics gloss over is the fact that she'll be the author of them. She's very meticulous with details, and she uses interesting metaphors. So her next book won't be about Harry Potter. Not all of James Patterson's are about Alex Cross.
