Jail Inmates Burned Tying to Smoke: Should inmates be allowed cigarettes?

Political Pirate July 09, 2009 19:05:30

Two inmates at a Georgia jail burned themselves trying to smoke handmade cigarettes. The men tried to light the cigarette using a spark from an electrical socket, when it started a fire. The inmates quickly put out the electrical fire with water, but suffered minor burns, and had to be taken for treatment. Smoking was banned from the jail over 10 years ago, but that never stops inmates from being creative.
Yes, prison inmates should be allowed to smoke cigarettes.

No. Jail inmates should not be allowed to smoke cigarettes.

I guess I'm a tad partial on this one. Joe Arpiao is my Sheriff (Maricopa County , AZ). He's had tobacco, girlie books and snack-type foods banned from MCSO Jails for years now. The pink underwear the inmates wear is just the frosting on the cake.
Hey, the inmates are in JAIL. No frills. If'n you can't do the time, don't do the crime ;-)

Yes, prison inmates should be allowed to smoke cigarettes.

I would say as long as they had decent behavior, they should be allowed to. Any slip ups, then none for a while. That is how I would do it. If they want to pay money to waste their life, then that is their choice. Everything else is taken away from them. At least give them one small thing they want.

If they can pay for them and they smoke outside why not. A lot of people are in jail for things that we have all done but we were lucky enough to get away with it or we had a mommy or daddy that cared enough to fork over the money to get us out. There is no such thing as justice. If you have money you will probably get off if you don't then you sit in jail until they ship you off to prison. There are a lot of people sitting in prison right now who did the crime of drug addiction.

I am very surprised at all the "yes" answers. These people are in prison for committing crimes. Why should they get ANYTHING they want, let alone the privilege of ruining their own health? Ban anything that gives them pleasure. We need to deter people from committing crimes. If they know prison is a harsh environment, maybe they will think twice before committing the crime. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Hopefully these 2 idiots from the story above will electrocute themselves next time and save the taxpayers some money.

They are not allowed weapons, illegal drugs, or sex, but that doesn't stop them from getting all of the above.
We have to pay for their health care, so I would enforce the bans very strictly, severe criminal punishment to people that get the drugs to them...weather that is guards, girlfriends or fellow prisoners.

Yes, prison inmates should be allowed to smoke cigarettes.

Let them smoke. If they can pay for them or get them from home let them have them. It just gives inmates more reason to act out. The purpose for putting them in there was to get them off our streets for our protection. That done lets not fuck over them every chance we get. The guards don't want to smell smoke Quit. I watch the show Lock Up on MSNBC and the treatment of these PEOPLE is outrageous. Then the rest of us wonder why these guys come out of these places so violent. Out here in California they pay these guards super star salaries because the inmates are so violent. Well if you knock a man down every time you look at him he is going to defend himself after a while. If you let the guy at least have a smoke once in a while maybe he will be a little less violent.

no time to quit like the present, one more thing for people who commit crimes to think about, (am I really ready to quit smoking?) plus it would be less to barter for in jail

Why not supply the most violent offenders with happy weed? When was the last time you recall that a bunch of pot smokers laid waste to anything but their oun consciousness? Hell, we could sell it to inmates and make prisons self-supporting? We could make pot farms out of state prisons in California and balance the state's budget. Or, supply the legislature with great dope and get the budget agreement we have been hoping for for the last few years!

Absolutely no cigarettes. They endanger everyone around them with the pollution. I do also agree with the post about only giving them healthy food, which would include high fiber meals of whole grains, lots of fruits and vegetables, and absolutely no meat.

You don't believe in taking away someones rights? These people committed crimes against others, flagrantly disregarding the rights of those others. They are in prison - that seems to be the most appropriate place to forfeit your rights. They should have no privileges whatsoever. When they get released, they get their rights back. Maybe this policy will deter others from committing crimes.

I worked as a prison guard for a while. It sure makes the guards job easier if these people are not angry. We have to remember they will be let out someday. I rather not have someone who carries a chip on their shoulder coming out of prison. Sometimes people get put in prison who are inocent. Other countries handle their criminals differently and they have much better results. We have to remember that these people are human and if we walked in their shoes we might commit the same crime they do.

Many people are in prison for drug crimes. Some would argue that this is a victimless crime. The justice system is not fair. If you are poor you go to jail if you have money chances are you will not. So does it seem fair to put someone in jail for a crime that someone else gets away with and then while they are in jail treat them like shit too. Because they do get treated like shit. Its very dehumanizing even though they do get to watch cable tv.

As long as we, the taxpayers, are paying for their medical care, they should have no tobacco, no alcohol, and a fairly restrictive, health food diet, low in fat and sodium, high in fiber.

actually thats kinda funny that they are that stupid and hard up for tobacco. whats also funny is the ones that make potato whiskey in a toilet bowl. Hell no don't let them smoke, they are in there for one reason, to be punished. Don't give them the privileges of a free and innocent man.
