It seems a disproportionate amount of SH profiles contain a claim that they have obtained advanced academic degrees. Do you buy it?

It seems odd to me as many of these individuals do not talk like educated people.

If their communication skills are extremely poor and they have an inability to even use spell check, their claims lack credibility.

There's no way these people could have ever made it through college writing the way they do.

I am not sure. I know for myself I have a masters n education and will (hopefully) be starting on a doctrate soon... however I do not spell well nor do I type well... I have also spent a great amount of time with people who have very little "formal education" and uet can speak very well and intellegently about many topics yet get them to write something and they are inable to do it. And I have had teh opertunity to read a great deal of accidemic papers by some "brillent" people and yet when speaking to them they sound like fools.

I think when it comes to online communities like SH we have to consider a few things.

I its online... so of course those who need to build self esteem may need to "flub" their stats, as well writing an opinion in an "emotionally charged" enviorment where personal atacts are common in leiu of civil debate is sometimes enough to turn normally well writen people into stammering fools and finally it is actually two different skill sets writing and speaking and depending on teh type of education someone has they may have developed different strengths. Someone who has an advanced degree in stats may be very good at conveying in writing while a person who has an advanced degree in math may be better at lecture

I have had conversations with a few here that claim advanced degrees, I don't know what discipline they are in, but I can tell you it isn't English composition.
I am sure there are some but the majority claiming to be conservative Christian I find to be the most unbelievable.

I don't care. They are none of my business. I don't like liars. There are times when in war you have to not tell everything to protect you troops and country. But I never make rash statements about people I don't know.

Not sure, haven't thought about it. I tend to think the young people talk like idiots, and the older people who claim higher education usually sound okay.

I'm damn sure there are many that lie about what type of degree they've obtained, but there's no need to speak or type with the dictionary at hand when you're in a informal setting such as this.

Some are telling the truth but I don't feel like it's any of my business.
There is a funny person that has their complete resume on their profile. Its full of holes, and now they "claim" to be in management in retail and making $100k+ a year. I noticed they removed it later. Trying wayyyyyy to hard to be important.

A lot of folks need to make themselves look bigger and better than real life because it makes them feel important. Being older and looking important means little to most seniors but life lessons are what we are and we have to give from experiences, some good and some bad.

Like I was telling someone the other day when they accused me of faking my profile "If I'm going to put up a fake profile, it certainly wouldn't be as a 52 yr old guy with love handles". Ironically enough, that same person was in high school, yet retired and making over $100K. I look at it as one way of separating the idiots from the decent people.

Based on what they secrete here, it is either from a diploma mill or in a field that has no relevance to what they are making claims about.
Like "Dr." Kent Hovind and his "doctorate" in "christian education" from the "Patriot Bible University" diploma mill.
Oh, here is a picture of this "university".
