Isn't Scientology the same as Atheism?

Just about everyone knows that Tom Cruise, Kirstie Alley, and John
Travolta are Scientologists, but they aren't the only famous members of
this organization. Quite a few people, especially in Hollywood, seem to
be attracted to the Church of Scientology. Do you know who they are?

Wikipedia has a list which includes:

Anne Archer, actress

Cathy Lee Crosby, actress

Jenna Elfman, actress, raised Catholic

Chaka Khan, singer

Jason Lee, actor and professional skateboarder

Juliette Lewis, actress

Corin Nemec, actor

Bernadette Peters, actress and singer

Mimi Rogers, actress

Patrick Swayze, actor

Greta Van Susteren

There are also a number of famous ex-Scientologists, too, including:

J. J. Abrams, Writer

Emilio Estevez, actor (renounced it and won’t discuss it)

Charles Manson, serial killer

Ricky Martin, singer (says he dabbled in it)

Van Morrison, singer, songwriter

Jerry Seinfeld, comedian

Oliver Stone, director (said involvement was finished after 4 months)

Sharon Stone, actress........
Also, If atheism is the absence of belief in gods, then many Buddhists are, indeed, atheists.

Buddhism is not about either believing or not believing in God or
gods. Rather, the historical Buddha taught that believing in gods was
not useful for those seeking to realize enlightenment. In other words,
God is unnecessary in Buddhism. For this reason, Buddhism is more
accurately called nontheistic than atheistic.

    Their website says:

DOES SCIENTOLOGY HAVE A CONCEPT OF GOD?
Most definitely. In Scientology, the concept of God is expressed as the Eighth Dynamic—the urge toward existence as infinity. This is also identified as the Supreme Being

So, you definitely cannot be both an atheist and a scientologist.

Whether or not they mention a god is neither here nor there. Atheists don't believe in supernatural "woo," and Scientologists do. Seriously, Google is your friend.

Not even close. Scientologists believe they are spirits and do believe in the existence of a Supreme Being (God) and Atheists don't believe in either. Scientologists believe you have lived before and Atheists do not. It seems that studying Scientology is more like studying a practical guide to everyday living, and appears to be less involved with God. As a group they don't "worship a God", but believe -- they certainly do. Any Scientologist can worship God, but how they do so is not dictated by the church and is left up to the individual.

There are many many differences. Atheism doesn't believe in god or spirit or that you will live or have lived beyond this life. Scientology believes in all of those things.

It's a weird cult to be sure. Probably not quite the same as atheism but close enough. I read some of Ron L. Hubbards writings when I was in my teens. Same timeframe that I was really into the occult. Fortunately I found Christ and now I belong to the one true God. I took a long twisted road to get here but our God is a loving forgiving one and when I came he took me in with open arms, lovingly dusted me off and has been working on me since. I will never be perfect but I'm glad to be a work in progress!

    L. Ron Hubbard wrote of his idea in a book that I read when I was 9 years old.
His wife wrote the epilog and said that he should develop this idea into a real religion.
    He did so.
Atheism is a disbelief or what have you of religion.

I meant to say NO because there is only one answer: The differences are basic - Scientology believing in God and believes you are a spirit - and Atheists not believing in God or spirit.

I don't know why such a question would be asked being that this is an opinion poll and a simple google search answers the question. For those who don't know how to do a google search - here are the links that will answer your questions:

confirmed, they take everything he wrote down as fact and made some really wild stories about himself. http://www.cracked.com/articl...

to alter any of his work is known as squirreling the tech and it's something you get hell for because they wan to keep it pure. to bad current management keeps changing it saying this is the real deal by hubbard himself, the editor messed up and didn't print the right version of his writings. ask former scientologist larry anderson. there is audio of him complaining about that. he talks about it started at 5:20

    * because they want you to pay a lot of money to be subjected to their quackery
    * because if you try to leave the fold they hound you mercilessly
    * because if you say anything not complimentary about their "belief system", they file a lawsuit against you
    * because they cultivate Hollywood personalities as their in-front-of-the-camera spokespeople
    * because they are intensely secretive

I think also the Jehovahs are really wacky too. I have no trespassing signs everywhere and they just walk right pass them. I asked them were they blind or did they think they were special and were allowed to trespass. I told them that there is a no soliciting law and they said they were not soliciting. I said, oh yes you are, you are soliciting your religion. They said, no, they weren't selling their religion. I said, in 20 seconds i am going to shoot your asses right to the pearly gates..first class ticket and as they were running, i said and make a note to your fellowship not to come near my house ever again.

Scientologists believe in God and they are spiritual beings - and as spirits, we don't die. Atheists believe you are a body and when you die you die. So no, it isn't the same thing.

check it out, search scientology on the site and sort by new. 3 new polls after yours completely unrelated to the subject that for some strange reason have scientology tags in them. guess who make 2 of them... and they all have a specific line in them very much like each other. tell you anything?

yeah, it's really to make a cover up. it's an effect to try to keep people from reading anything critical on them. there are in fact scientologists whose job is to go around the internet to act as PR and damage control. I know, sounds whacky but one name seen around doing that is Louanne or Louanne Lee who is also on the site but rarely seen on here.

That is not true. "From all you read" must be on the internet which are writings with those who know nothing about Scientology. There are many many books written by Hubbard and if you read any, it really depends on the subject as to whether God is mentioned. There are Scientology books that have to do with other subjects - such as relationships with your spouse, raising children, which may not mention God, but a book about personal ethics discusses the "Eighth dynamic" which is one's relationship with God. Books that discuss the religious aspects of Scientology, definitely mention God. Scientology does not dictate that you "follow a God" though - it is up to the individual to find their way. But the belief in God, is definitely part of the teachings.

As noted by another Soda Head below, here is what is said: "In Scientology, the concept of God is expressed as the Eighth Dynamic—the urge toward existence as infinity. This is also identified as the Supreme Being." I've been a Scientologist for over 30 years, and I can tell you without hesitation that Scientologists do believe in God.

You asked a question in this poll - whether Scientology is the same as Atheism. The answer is obviously "no" because of the belief in God, spirituality, and also the belief that we've lived before and will again.

Actually that isn't true. They don't focus on God, more on the person themselves- improving the person spiritually, but God is mentioned and there definitely is the belief in a supreme being which sets itself apart from atheism.
